The Mariinsky Theatre Orchestra, originally known as the Russian Imperial Opera Orchestra, was founded in 1783 during the reign of Catherine the Great in St. Petersburg, Russia. They are one of the oldest musical institutions in Russia and underwent several name changes, including a period under Joseph Stalin in 1935 when they were renamed the Kirov Orchestra after Sergei Kirov. In 1992, following the collapse of the Soviet Union, they reverted to their current name. Under the artistic direction of Valery Gergiev since 1988, they became a leading symphony orchestra in Russia. Their soloists participate in international festivals.
