Jorge Meza y Su Tropicolombia was a Colombian cumbia project led by singer, accordionist and composer Jorge Meza, who came from Barranquilla and grew up in the same coastal musical tradition as his brother, cumbia icon Lisandro Meza. After beginning his career in Colombia, he moved to California in the early 2000s and formed Tropicolombia as a touring and recording group that blended classic costeño cumbia with the sound-system-driven aesthetic of the Mexican sonidero scene. Through the 2000s and 2010s he released albums such as Sentimiento Vallenato, Renovado and Quiero Volar, which introduced favourites like “Quiero Volar,” “De Todos Mis Amores,” “Llorando Se Fue” and “Lo Que Traje de Colombia,” tracks that became staples in Mexican dance halls and among U.S. Latino audiences. Later releases and compilations, including Éxitos de Oro, strengthened his catalogue, while his collaboration with Café Records produced titles such as Lo Que Traigo para Ti, Oasis de Amor, Cumbias de Verdad Ombee and, after his passing, the 2021 album Muévelo, which featured streaming-era standouts like “La Pollera Negra,” “La Joya,” “Cumbia Colombia” and “Cumbia Coqueta.” Jorge Meza died on 3 June 2020 in Sincelejo, and although he passed shortly before the digital resurgence of his work, his recordings continued to thrive across sonidero playlists and diaspora circuits, preserving his legacy as a vital link between Colombian cumbia tradition and its modern Mexican and U.S. variants.
