With a career spanning more than five decades, French-Italian singer Christophe has released 17 studio albums, reinventing his musical style several times during his career, which he began in 1963 by releasing a four track EP called 'Reviens Sophie' under his birth name Daniel Bevilacqua. This did not do very well, so he changed his name to Christophe and released his biggest hit 'Aline' in 1965. The single reached number one in the French Singles Chart and also in Spain, Belgium, Israel, Turkey and Brazil with over a million records sold. Christophe released his second single 'Les Marionnettes' later in the same year and this also reached number one in France and Belgium. The singles 'J'ai Entendu La Mer' and 'Excuse-Moi Monsieur Professeur' followed in 1966.
During the late 1960s, Christophe's music fell from favour but in the 1970s, he signed to record label Motors Records and worked with Jean Michel Jarre to produce the album 'Les Paradis Perdus' in 1973. Amongst other albums for Motors, 'Les Mots Bleus' was released in 1974 and was followed by two sell-out concerts at Olympia. He released the album 'La Dolve Vita' in 1977 and then an album more influenced by rock music, 'Le Beau Bizarre' in 1978. This album was listed by Libération as one of the 100 best albums in the history of rock & roll.
Also with Motors, Christophe released his single 'Aline' again in 1979 and it enjoyed a renewed success and popularity. The album 'Pas Vu, Pas Pris' was released in 1980 and 'Clichés d'Amour' in 1983. The single 'Succès Fou' (1983), a ballad released from this album, became one of his biggest hits, selling over 600,000 copies.
Christophe disappeared from the music scene for a period of several years, leaving Motor Records in 1995 to join the label Epic, a branch of Sony Records. In 1996 he released a comeback album with the title 'Bevilacqua', his birth surname. This had a more modern, experimental sound with some tracks using electronics. He wrote all the songs himself. He also returned to the stage, performing another series of concerts at Olympia. In 2001, Christophe released the album 'Comm' Si La Terre' and then started to work on a collaborative album with several other artists including Isabelle Adjani, Daniel Filipacchi and Florian Zeller. The album was released on the label AZ in 2008 and entitled 'Aimer Ce Que Nous Sommes'. It reached number five in the French Albums Chart.
Christophe spent most of the next few years performing in concerts and tours both throughout France and internationally. He returned to Motors Records to release the albums 'Paradis retrouvé' in 2013 and 'Intimé' in 2014. He released 'Les Vestiges du Chaos' with Universal Music in 2016 and 'Christophe Etc.' with Capitol in 2019.
