Die Ärzte (The Physicians) are a German punk rock band formed in 1982 in Berlin by singer-guitarist Jan Vetter (who goes by the name Farin Urlaub), drummer Dirk Felsenheimer (Bela B.) and bassist Hans Runge (Sahnie), who left in 1985. The current lineup includes Rodrigo González on bass. Vetter and Felsenheimer previously had been in a band called Soilent Grün. After winning a regional talent contest, they released their first EP, 'Uns geht's prima' in 1983. Their debut album, 'Debil' came out in 1984 followed one year later by 'Im Schatten der Ärzte'. Their provocative lyrics led to censure by German authorities, but they released further albums such as 'Die Ärzte' (1986) and 'Das ist nicht die ganze Wahrheit' (1988) after which they broke up.
They reformed in 1993 for the album 'Die Bestie in Menschengestalt' and released more albums including 'Planet Punk' (1995), 'Le Frisur' (1996), '13' (1998), 'Runter mit den Spendierhosen, Unsichtbarer!' (2000), '5, 6, 7, 8 - Bullenstaat!' (2001), 'Geräusch' (2003), 'Jazz ist anders' (2007) and 'Auch' (2012). The track 'zeiDverschwÄndung' from the latter release went to number three on Billboard's Germany Songs chart. 'Schrei Nach Liebe', from their 2013 album 'Die Nacht de Dämonen: Live', topped the Germany Songs chart. Their 2018 album 'Seitenhirsch' peaked at number ten on the Germany Albums chart and 'They've Given Me Schrott!: Die Outtakes' reached number two in 2019. Their 2019 schedule was to include appearances at venues in cities including Warsaw, Prague, Zagreb, Milan, Ljubljana, Strasbourg, Luxembourg, Amsterdam, Brussels, Nickelsdorf, Austria, and in St. Gallen, Switzerland with Florence and the Machine.
