Born May 23, 1978, in Tel Aviv, Israel, Avishai Cohen was surrounded by music from an early age. His siblings are both saxophonists - sister Anat and brother Yuval - and they encouraged him to take up an instrument, to which he chose the trumpet. He studied at Berklee College of Music in Boston, Massachusetts before moving to New York. Often mistaken for the bass player with the same name, he titled his 2003 debut album The Trumpet Player. He followed this with 2007's After the Big Rain and 2008’s Flood. After several more albums, his 2016 release Into the Silence sparked a change in direction for Cohen, with elements of classical and ambient influences. Cross My Palm with Silver was released in 2017 to coincide with a world tour. Two years later, he collaborated with Yonathan Avishai on the album Playing the Room (2019). In 2020, he worked with the group Big Vicious and released their self-titled album. Working with several members of that band, Avishai Cohen released the album Naked Truth in 2022.
