M|A|R|R|S, a British house music recording collective, were formed in 1987 through a collaboration between shoegaze group A R Kane and electronic band Colourbox. The project included DJs CJ Mackintosh and Dave Dorrell on scratching and John Fryer on sampling duties. M|A|R|R|S released their debut single "Pump Up the Volume" in August 1987, which went to number one in the UK charts and secured top 10 positions in several other European countries. The track featured samples from various artists, including Public Enemy and Eric B. & Rakim, famously sparking legal disputes over sampling rights. Nonetheless, "Pump Up the Volume" was a cultural milestone, influencing subsequent sampling practices and inspiring similar works like Beat Dis by Bomb the Bass and Doctorin’ the House by Coldcut. The song's impact extended to film, being featured in the soundtrack of the 1988 movie My Stepmother Is an Alien. The collective disbanded after this single release due to internal disagreements regarding naming rights and royalties. A R Kane were initially reluctant to continue without proper recognition of their contributions. Despite these challenges, "Pump Up the Volume" remains a seminal work in the history of house music and sampling.
