From Sunderland in the North East of England, Dave Stewart has been one of the most enduringly successful guitarist and songwriter of the modern era through high profile associations with various outfits, most famously Eurythmics. Stewart initially made his mark as a teenage guitarist with Longdancer, who were mostly unsuccessful despite being signed to Elton John's label Rocket. Things took a turn for the better, however, after he moved to London and met Annie Lennox, triggering a partnership which changed both their lives, initially in the band The Tourists (who had a 1979 hit with a cover of Dusty Springfield's I Only Want To Be With You) and then Eurythmics, one of the biggest-selling duos of all time with a series of major hits like Sweet Dreams (Are Made Of This), Who's That Girl and Sisters Are Doin' It For Themselves (with Aretha Franklin). When Eurthymics finally split in 1990, Stewart collaborated with Terry Hall as Vegas before releasing his first solo album Greetings From The Gutter four years later. He then worked with Paul McCartney and members of U2 on a Nelson Mandela charity project and involved himself in Greenpeace Works, a celebrity-based initiative promoting green issues. He has also produced and collaborated on songs and albums with numerous other leading artists, including Bob Dylan, Bono, Stevie Nicks, Ringo Starr and the Secret Sisters and in 2000 made his debut as a movie director with the film Honest, featuring members of girl group All Saints. In 2011 he worked with Mick Jagger, Joss Stone, Damian Marley and A.R. Rahman on a projected supergroup called Super Heavy and in 2012 released a new solo album The Ringmaster General.
