Born in 1993, Lea Desandre is a mezzo soprano of French and Italian descent and one of the most promising stars in opera. Originally interested in classical dance, she studied the art until an accident put an end to her dreams. At the age of 12. She joined the children’s choir at the Paris Opera 2. Inspired by Natalie Dessay, she became interested in opera. Lea Desandre studied voice in Paris, France before studying under early music contralto Sara Mingardo in Venice, Italy. She won first prize at a youth competition at the Grand Théâtre de Bordeaux in 2013 and made her debut as a soloist the following year at the Théâtre des Champs-Elysées in Paris. Since 2015, she has received critical acclaim for her many roles include Urbain (Les Huguenots), Rosina (Il barbiere di Siviglia), Annio (La clemenza di Tito), Sesto (Giulio Cesare), Dido (Dido and Aeneas), Messaggera (L’Orfeo), Flerida in Cavalli’s Erismena and the title role in Marais’ Alcione. She even appeared at the Paris Opéra Comique in a one-woman show, Et in Arcadia ego, with music by Rameau, in 2018. Lea Desandre made her Salzburg Festival debut at Whitsun 2018 in Offenbach’s La Périchole and returned the same summer as Amore and Valletto (L’incoronazione di Poppea). Her performances have taken her to many prestigious venues including London’s Wigmore Hall, the Vienna Musikverein, the Walt Disney Concert Hall in Los Angeles, the Théâtre des Champs-Élysées and many others. As a recording artist, her catalog includes Bernice, chef ai ? with Natalie Perez and Chantal Santon-Jeffery (2017), Handel: Italian Cantatas (2018) and Amazone (2021).
