Divine was born Harris Glenn Milstead on 19 October 1945 in Baltimore, Maryland. As a singer and drag queen, Divine gained prominence through her collaborations with director John Waters and her impactful roles in independent cinema. Her music career began in the early 1980s when she released her first album Born To Be Cheap. In 1984, Divine achieved significant chart success with the single "You Think You're a Man", which peaked at number 16 on the UK Singles Chart. This track was produced by Stock, Aitken & Waterman for Proto Records and marked a pivotal moment in her career. Throughout the decade, Divine continued to release albums such as My First Album (1982) and The Story So Far (1984). Her music, characterised by dance pop and electronic genres, garnered international acclaim, particularly in Europe and Australia. Despite facing challenges in the US market, Divine's influence extended beyond her music, inspiring various cultural movements and figures within the LGBTQIA+ community. She passed away on 7 March 1988 at the age of 42 due to hypertrophic cardiomyopathy. Posthumous releases include Maid in England (1988).
