Founded in 1994 in the UK by violinist Adrian Chandler, La Serenissima is a baroque ensemble that specializes in playing the music of Vivaldi and other 18th century baroque composers. In order to make the music as authentic as possible, Adrian Chandler uses the composers’ original manuscripts and period instruments to ensure that each arrangement is as close as possible to the18th century repertoire. Apart from the work of Vivaldi, La Serenissima also performs compositions by Brescianello, Albinoni, Matteis the Younger, Locatelli, Sammartini, Tartini, Caldara, Corelli, Bach, and Telemann. Adrian Chandler had previously been a member of the New London Consort and the Concerto Caledonia before forming this ensemble using a group of new musicians. Alongside their own performances and recordings, La Serenissima has collaborated in the past with other artists including Robert Horwath, Gareth Deats, Katy Bircher, Peter Whelan, and soprano Mhairi Lawson. The ensembles’ recorded output includes titles such as Per Monsieur Pisendel (2003), Vivaldi: L'Amore per Elvira (2006), The Rise of the North Italian Violin Concerto 1690-1740 (2006-2008), and Vivaldi: The French Connection (2009), which won the Gramophone Award of the Year for Baroque Music in 2010. Further recordings include Vivaldi: Gods, Emperors & Angels (2010), Vivaldi: The Four Seasons (2015), The Italian Job (2017), The Godfather: Masters of the German & Italian Baroque (2019), Extra Time (2020), and An Englishman Abroad: Nicola Matteis the Younger and the English Style in the 18th Century (2023).
