Shai, an American R&B quartet, was formed in 1992 on the campus of Howard University. The group consisted of Garfield A. Bright, Marc Gay, Carl Martin, and Darnell Van Rensalier, who initially performed together as part of an a cappella group. Their breakthrough came with the release of their debut single "If I Ever Fall in Love" in 1992, which peaked at number 2 on the Billboard Hot 100. This success led to the signing with Gasoline Alley/MCA Records and the release of their self-titled debut album If I Ever Fall in Love later that year. The album included notable tracks such as "Comforter" and "Baby I'm Yours," both of which reached number 10 on the U.S. charts. In 1993, Shai released a remix album titled Right Back at Cha, featuring reworked versions of their previous hits. They won an NAACP Image Award for Outstanding New Artist in 1993 and performed at Bill Clinton's inauguration alongside notable artists such as Michael Jackson and Quincy Jones. Their follow-up album, Blackface, was released in 1995 and included the single "Come with Me." Throughout their career, Shai also appeared on television shows like Family Matters and contributed to soundtracks, including the Beverly Hills Cop III soundtrack with the song "The Place Where You Belong." Over the following decades, Shai continued performing and releasing albums like Back from the Mystery System: The Love Cycle (2004) and Musically Yours (2018).
