KRU was a Malaysian boy band that formed in Kuala Lumpur in May 1992. The group's lineup was comprised of three brothers — Norman Abdul Halim, Datuk Yusry Abdul Halim, and Edry Abdul Halim — who all spent a number of childhood years in London, where they developed musical tastes that reached far beyond the popular trends of their native Malaysia. Using a keyboard that Norman Adbul Halim had received from his aunt, the brothers retuned to Malaysia and began making their own demo recordings, which eventually earned them a record contract with EMI. Their debut album, Canggih, was released in 1992, featuring a youthful sound inspired by pop, hip-hop, and R&B. Although KRU's name stood for "Kumpulan Rap Utama" (or "Major Rap Group"), the group continued to embrace a diverse sound on albums like 1993's reKRUed, 1995's Beware: Awas da Soundtrack, 1998's English-language The Way We Jam, and 2001's Krujaan, all of which maintained the band's massive popularity in Malaysia. Although Yusry Abdul Halim released a solo album, Yusry, in 2003, KRU remained active through 2018, with Gergasi marking the band's final release. In addition to writing hit songs for artists like Ezlynn, the three brothers also launched the multi-national entertainment company KRU Studios, producing a number of albums, live events, and international films throughout the 2000s.
