Gregory Dane Brown, known as Greg Brown, is an American folk singer-songwriter and guitarist born on July 2, 1949, in Iowa. He began his career performing with bands before returning to Iowa to focus on live performances and songwriting. In the early 1980s, he self-released two albums, 44 & 66 (1980) and The Iowa Waltz (1981). Brown’s breakthrough came after the founding of Red House Records by Bob Feldman in 1983. He has released over two dozen albums, including Songs of Innocence and of Experience (1986), based on poems by William Blake, and One Big Town (1989), which won a NAIRD Indie award. His 1994 album The Poet Game received significant radio play and another NAIRD Indie award for Singer-Songwriter Album of the Year. Brown retired from touring in 2019.
