Al Hurricane, born Alberto Nelson Sanchez on July 10, 1936, in Dixon, New Mexico, was a trailblazing American singer-songwriter celebrated as "The Godfather of New Mexico Music." Raised in a musically gifted family, he began playing guitar at age five and performed in Albuquerque’s Old Town by his teens. His early singles, including "Lobo" and "Panchita," showcased his instrumental prowess, and in 1967, he released his debut album, Mi Saxophone, featuring the hit "Sentimiento," which later inspired a cover by Selena. Combining New Mexico’s Spanish music traditions with country, rock, and Latin influences, Al Hurricane’s style captivated audiences across the U.S. and Latin America. Throughout his career, he performed alongside legends like Marvin Gaye and Fats Domino and released over 30 albums, including Canciones del Alma (1970), La Prision de Santa Fe (1980), and Siempre (2002). A car accident in 1969 left him with an iconic eye patch, symbolizing his resilience. He also collaborated with family members, including his son Al Hurricane Jr., and led the supergroup Bandido in the 1980s. His last studio album, Hey Sugar Baby! (2010), reflected his global musical influences. Al Hurricane passed away in 2017, leaving an indelible legacy in New Mexico’s cultural and musical history.
