Danish pop star Oh Land was born
Nanna Øland
Fabricius on May 2, 1985 in Copenhagen. The daughter of musicians, she studied
ballet seriously until a back injury ended any chance of a career in dance. Her
first album, 2008’s Fauna, set her sonic template, danceable songs with
electronica flourishes that reminding critics of artists like Lily Allen and Robyn.
Her live shows featured elaborate choreography, and the attention she was
drawing led to her 2010 breakthrough Oh Land. The album went top 5 in
Denmark and did well in the U.S. hitting Number 24 on the alternative rock
album chart. Two singles the Number 13 hit “White Nights” and the Number
4 smash “Speak Out Now”. She maintained that momentum for 2012’s Wish
Bone, another top 5 album in Denmark, however 2014’s Earth Sick
failed to draw much attention. She spent the next few years releasing singles,
waiting until 2019 to drop her next LP, Family Tree, which became the
third top 40 album of her career. She returned to the singles charts for the
first time since “Speak Out Now” in 2020 with “Julefeber”.
