Born in Rome, he began with bebop before accompanying, from the 1970s onward, musicians such as Johnny Griffin, Art Farmer, Chet Baker, and Lee Konitz, recording landmark albums with them. A prolific leader (over 80 albums), he has developed a lyrical, swinging style, exploring trio and solo formats as well as tributes to jazz, film music, and classical composers.
