A singer in Webb Pierce's band in the early '50s, he scored his first hit, "Goin' Steady", in 1953, followed by three monumental hits in the early '60s, "Alone With You", "Country Girl" and "Hello Walls", written by Willie Nelson. Victim of a serious traffic accident in 1970, he saw success smile on him again in 1972, thanks to "Four In The Morning", a song without an "s" due to pronunciation problems resulting from a large tongue injury!
An essential country crooner, he also had a career in film (Hidden Guns, Road To Nashville) and television, as well as being founder and editor of Music City News magazine.
