Founded in Milan, Italy in 1985 by flutist and conductor Giovanni Antonini and lutenist Luca Pianca, Il Giardino Armonico has established itself as an important baroque music ensemble. The ensemble specializes in playing 17th- and 18th-century music on period instruments. Throughout their history, they’ve featured many renowned soloists including solo violinist Enrico Onofri, organist Lorenzo Ghielmi, violinists Marco Bianchi and Duilio Galfetti, flutist Jean Tubéry, cellist Elena Russo, oboist Hans-Peter Westermann and many others. Depending on the work that is performed, the orchestra adapts from six to thirty musicians and collaborates with vocalists and instrumentalists. Their early recordings include Sonate Italiane Per Flauto (1989) and Christmas Concertos (1991). Signing with the Teldec label in 1992, they released four separate volumes dedicated to the music of Vivaldi entitled Concerti da Camera (Vols. 1-4). Vivaldi was a composer that they focused on many times throughout their recording career including The Red Priest (1996), the Grammy-winning The Vivaldi Album (1999/with Cecilia Bartoli), Violin Concertos (2005), Ottone In Villa (2010), and Vivaldi Favorites (2017). Their collaboration with Bartoli continued on albums such as the platinum selling Sacrificium (2009) and Farinelli (2019). In 2020, they issued Haydn’s No. 8 – La Roxolana, Musica Barocca (on vinyl), What’s Next Vivaldi?, Haydn’s Die Schöpfung, and Vivaldi’s Concerti Per Flauto.
