Zaperoko, officially known as La Orquesta Zaperoko La Resistencia Salsera del Callao, is a Peruvian salsa orchestra founded in 2009, composed entirely of musicians from Callao, with the mission of preserving and reviving the classic salsa sound that shaped the identity of their community. Led by Jhonny Peña, Zaperoko is known for bringing traditional salsa back to the forefront, performing vintage hits with a modern twist that resonates with both older generations and new audiences. From their beginnings playing on the streets to becoming a staple in major salsa events, the group has made a name for itself by reinterpreting iconic songs such as "La revancha", originally by Cuco Valoy, and "Mala mujer", which became one of their signature tunes. Over the years, Zaperoko has collaborated with international legends like Ismael Miranda, Tony Vega, Willie González, and Lalo Rodríguez, among others, solidifying their place in the Latin music scene. Their energetic performances and commitment to the roots of salsa have earned them invitations to perform alongside cumbia and chicha bands, demonstrating the broad appeal of their music and their role in keeping Callao’s salsa tradition alive.
