One of jazz's leading drummers, Paul Motian cut his teeth in Bill Evans' trio from 1961 to 1966, before moving on to Keith Jarrett's trio. In addition to this prestigious service, he collaborated with Charlie Haden's Liberation Music Orchestra and took part in numerous sessions with great figures of the jazz avant-garde, from Albert Ayler to Paul Bley. In 1972, he embarked on a career as a leader for the ECM label, to which he has remained faithful ever since. His achievements include the albums Dance (1977), It Should've Happened a Long Time Ago (1984), Misterioso (1986) and Sound of Love (1988). His subsequent work is just as inventive in the albums Fantasm (2000), Garden of Eden (2006) and Lost in a Dream (2010). Paul Motian died on November 22, 2011 at the age of 80.
