To make developing more accessible; to empower students; to change the world by changing the apps and websites we all use every day!Betty Holberton helped shape modern computing. Along with her 6 person team, she programmed the first ever major electronic computer, the ENIAC, to carry out essential, complex calculations during the Second World War. Almost a hundred years after she was born, a ground-breaking new IT school was named after her.The Holberton School was founded in 2015 by three French software engineers in San Francisco. Today, they have more than thirty campuses around the world, where the same standard of education is guaranteed, largely by the techology at the heart of the whole venture. Because in our fast-changing climate, skills need to change too.Mat Iliç, co-founded educational technology company Greenworkx in 2022. Mission Zero wears its aim in its name – the company is on a mission, working towards zero emissions of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere. But it’s the method that is revolutionary: Mission Zero focuses on pulling CO2 out of the atmosphere, and turning into some of the stuff we all need and love!Nicholas Chadwick, Shiladitya Ghosh and Gaël Gobaille-Shaw, chemist, chemical engineer and electrochemist respectively, came together around the realisation that: “(humanity is) facing an extinction event largely caused by excessive amounts of CO2 – when we have endless uses for that CO2”.And they set about harnessing the carbon dioxide in emissions and transforming it, not just to lock it away, but to actually put it to work. The Long Table sources its ingredients as locally as possible, from farmers “doing things in a hopeful way”; they employ people at a decent wage and train young people.And the Long Table community is going global! They’ve opened a second restaurant themselves, but Tom is also increasingly invited to share the concept: Bristol, Belfast but also Portland, USA. Richard Kennedy is cofounder and director of Cornerstone Place, a certified social enterprise that creates ethical and sustainable social housing.Richard is a multi-award-winning social entrepreneur; his co-founder David Ball is a seasoned property professional; together, they founded Cornerstone Place to put the power of business models to use to create genuine social change.More usual business models run on shareholder primacy, whereby a company’s duty is to maximise financial returns for its shareholders. Cornerstone Place runs on social primacy – their self-defined duty is to maximise social returns for people in need of housing. Joe Seddon is the young founder and CEO of one of the fastest growing companies in the UK: Zero Gravity, a social enterprise which connects the UK’s most talented students with mentors, universities, and employers. He has been named as one of the Top 10 Young Digital Leaders in the UK, and has received multiple awards for social impact in education.Joe built the company after graduating from Oxford with a First Class degree in Philosophy, Politics and Economics (PPE). Outstanding accomplishments, but accomplishments despite his background. Joe grew up  in a single-parent household in rural north-east England, where he went to state school. Nothing in his environment suggested he would get to Oxford.
