Show cover of Women Bridging the Gap

Women Bridging the Gap

Welcome to Women Bridging the Gap, a free-wheeling, conversation podcast co-hosted by Lenya Wilson, a Black woman and Alexandra D’Italia, a white woman. As two women over 50 who are still dreaming, planning, and working, we explore what womanhood means in today’s world, in today's American culture. And for us, that means identity and race usually enter into our conversation. We’re passionate, loud, funny, non-judgmental, and opinionated. We are feminists. We are elders. We believe in abundance. We believe in the power of storytelling. We’re not journalists, but we’re open about our experiences and eager to learn from others. We want to empower ourselves; and we want to share our experiences to empower you. We began this podcast in response to the murder of George Floyd, Amy Cooper’s weaponization of her white femininity, and the subsequent uprising. We believe that honesty, openness, and love can bridge the gap between people of color and white people. This podcast is a safe space. We bring people into the conversation, because your voices matter too. Just let us know. We want you to be in on our conversation—and help us move forward one conversation at a time.

What Doing The Work Feels Like
Alexandra and Lenya discuss the balances of both doing work, and doing the work. First work/life balance is addressed, and how we’re also facing hustle culture. Behaviors from this capitalistic pressure can be seen in the students in Alexandra’s classroom. And both describe how they have been using social media to engage and distance themselves from what they need to. -- **We want to hear from you!** Let us know how you’re speaking about these issues with your friends. **Let us know what topics you want to hear!** Email us at [Lenya.Alexandra.BridgingtheGap@gmail.com](mailto:Lenya.Alexandra.BridgingtheGap@gmail.com) You can find us at: [WomenBridgingtheGap.com](https://womenbridgingthegap.com)  Lenya’s Tik Tok: [@lenya_styles](https://www.tiktok.com/@lenya_styles) Or on Instagram: * Find Lenya at: [@lenya_styles](https://www.instagram.com/lenya_styles) * And Alexandra at: [@a_xandra17](https://www.instagram.com/a_xandra17) and [@thewritingleap](https://www.instagram.com/thewritingleap) * And the show is at: [@women_bridging_the_gap](https://www.instagram.com/women_bridging_the_gap/) This podcast was edited by Brendan Hutchins from Podcast Advocate. Still Processing the Dobbs Decision
Still Processing the Dobbs Decision   Just a nice easy laid-back episode about abortion. We need to talk about vaginas more, and this is the perfect place to start.   Alexandra and Lenya both share their own abortion stories, and discuss the anxieties of kids coming of age in a society that restricts abortion.   Alexandra also reads an incredible poem by Jacaranda School for Orphan’s student Felicia Luciano called Our Members of Parliament. A poignant and direct statement in beautiful language.   https://www.plannedparenthood.org   --   **We want to hear from you!** Let us know how you’re speaking about these issues with your friends. **Let us know what topics you want to hear!**   Email us at [Lenya.Alexandra.BridgingtheGap@gmail.com](mailto:Lenya.Alexandra.BridgingtheGap@gmail.com)   You can find us at: [WomenBridgingtheGap.com](https://womenbridgingthegap.com)    Lenya’s Tik Tok: [@lenya_styles](https://www.tiktok.com/@lenya_styles   Or on Instagram: * Find Lenya at: [@lenya_styles](https://www.instagram.com/lenya_styles) * And Alexandra at: [@a_xandra17](https://www.instagram.com/a_xandra17) and [@thewritingleap](https://www.instagram.com/thewritingleap) * And the show is at: [@women_bridging_the_gap](https://www.instagram.com/women_bridging_the_gap/)   This podcast was edited by Brendan Hutchins from Podcast Advocate. American Ninja Warrior Kadeem Aaron
Join us to talk with Kadeem Aaron, a successful Ninja Warrior on both the Australian and American versions of the show! He also happens to be Lenya’s son.   Kadeem goes over how he got started, what it takes to be a Ninja, some of the differences between the American and Australian shows, and his training practice. Racism in War
Where is the line between breaking the law and being a crappy person? That’s just the first thing on the agenda today.    Lenya and Alexandra are together again and the conversation goes from sexual assult on social media, to Bill Clinton and abuse of power, naturally, and transitions to Formula 1, Star Trek, and the war on Ukraine.   Events like these can bring to light a lot of racism that we all just live with and think is the norm, until the flashlight of light-skin elluminates the evils we have all accepted.    --   Please **rate and review** this podcast if you enjoyed it; reviews greatly help new listeners see this podcast is worth their time. Where is the line between wearing something for yourself, and wearing what a patriarchal society has conditioned you to want to wear?   Continuing on the musician topic, Alexandra and Lenya discuss artists like Michael Jackson and others who have fallen from grace, and what to do with the art of “monstars”, or people who have been, or should be, canceled.   --   Please **rate and review** this podcast if you enjoyed it; reviews greatly help new listeners see this podcast is worth their time. White Fragility in Everyday Conversation
Jumping right into it this episode with discussions of white fragility, and how easily and unwillingly it can present itself. Lenya brings in some tales of people whitesplaining on TikTok, and they discuss the fear regarding critical race theory.   Alexandra brings up a good point about past life regression for white people, and what racism you’ll find in your past.   They just had so much to talk about, that they’re going to have to put off the Super Bowl halftime show until next week! Already Ranting
Your favorite ladies are back at it again! And jumping right into it with fresh rants and raves. Well, not many raves, not much to rave about, but plenty to rant about.   Lenya has a big decision to make. She was invited to the USA Power Lifting competition, but they ban trans people. So she’s weighing if she should go and try to speak up about her views, or not go in protest. There are difficult and strong views on both sides. What do you think, listener? Let us know via email or social! We want to hear from you.   Alexandra got some frank news from her doctor, and it was a bitter pill to swallow. Having that Race Conversation at Holiday Dinner
It’s the final episode of the season and the year! Lenya and Alex have some holiday stories to tell, and they are good ones!   Lenya went to her white neighbor’s house for Thanksgiving dinner where the topic of race and police violence came up. Lenya spoke out about policing injustice, and was met with, well, the reaction you probably expect but also can not believe. What’s great though is that this story has a very happy ending.   Less happy are two more stories of police interacting with Lenya and Alex at points in their lives, and how the police took things too far, and how their skin color affected how each of them acted and felt.   Be sure to stay subscribed for when we return we'll check in on New Year's resolutions, and make some new ones for the coming year. Lenya performed at a weightlifting competition last week and is here to tell ua all about it. Not only did she tell us about how she won and what it was like, but explained the sport and the competition, how it’s judged, and what comes next.   Holidays are coming up, so we discuss what we have planned, and how we plan to not eat too much, famous last words.   But don’t think we just forgot about race issues, rounding out the episode we discuss Kyle Writtenhouse’s trial, the murder of Ahmaud Arbery and how that trial is getting less attention, and the overall weight of news today.   Alexandra was on a Gen-X trivia night podcast episode you can find here: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/who-will-save-generation-x-trivia-game-show/id1550660608   --   Please **rate and review** this podcast if you enjoyed it; reviews greatly help new listeners see this podcast is worth their time. Get Off My Lawn with Alexandra’s sister Candice D’Italia Gray
Alexandra’s sister, Candice, joins to discuss race and womanhood, in TikTok, in lacrosse, in being a mother, and in growing older. Candice D’Italia Gray is a former fourth grade teacher and reading specialist.  She taught in Inner City Baltimore and Southside Chicago. Twenty years later, her students still contact her and call her the teacher that made them love to learn. Vet tech, animal rescue volunteer, and girls’ lacrosse coach, Candice lives in a predominantly white  community in Wisconsin and raises her two children to not only believe in love and equality for all, but to fight for those values in the face of bias and prejudice.  What would you do as a mother, raising a middle school girl who wants to do everything she sees on TikTok? Candice tells Lenya and Alexandra all about what she does to protect her daughter, but also allow freedom to explore and experiment. Its a tough balance. After her son enjoyed lacrosse in school, Candice’s daughter wanted to play too, so Candice learned to coach lacrosse so her daughter could join the girl’s team. Candice explains about sexism, not only in sports, but just in the default way that we all walk through the world. Ending the episode with a few thoughts on aging, what it feels like, and what wisdom comes with it.  -- Please **rate and review** this podcast if you enjoyed it; reviews greatly help new listeners see this podcast is worth their time. A Plan To End Racism with Lenya's neighbor JC, Part 2
We continue this excellent conversation with JC, Lenya’s neighbor and fan of the show.   JC recommends the HBO documentary [Exterminate all the Brutes](https://www.hbo.com/exterminate-all-the-brutes) but warns it is not an easy watch about all the ways we still have slavery in this country.   The conversation spans a wide breadth of topics including the housing costs of LA County, to how a middle class person can afford housing, to religion as a salve for the sting of impending death.   Reach out and tell us if you want a Women Bridging The Gap TikTok, where we can engage further on conversations about Race and Womanhood. Fan of the show and neighbor of Lenya, JC joins the ladies to discuss politics, sports, and race throughout the world, and here in the US. Life and Dogs and Social Media
After a fantastic update on Lenya’s current lift training status, Alexandra and Lenya open up about the dogs they’ve raised, where they got them, what they asked for to get them, and how they lived their lives.    But as these things go, the conversation turned to race, and what is the nature of culture? How do you define culture, and when is it right to question a person’s actions, or their culture?    The episode wraps back to the perils of social media (Hey there, Capitalism, funny I’d meet you here.) and Lenya explains how TiKTok is the only social media platform she even wants to use anymore, and for good reason! Other social media platforms are silencing Black, Brown, and Indigionus voices.   And finally, Alexandra ponders where modern kids are learning civics lessons if not from School House Rock anymore. Home and Away: Racism in Home-buying and Travel
What’s up with Black families being blamed for lowering property values? Lenya took a stroll in a nice Black neighborhood, so she and Alexandra discussed why she would and wouldn’t move out of her nice white neighborhood. Also, Lenya talks about what Black people have to do to sell their homes, and an anecdote from her life where a sale fell through when buyers found out she was Black, but it sold when the buyers didn’t know that.   This expands to a conversation about how to stand up for yourself in the face of covert racism. Lenya mentions TikToks like this one: https://vm.tiktok.com/ZMRTronGQ/ that explain how Black people need to hold their ground.   Alexandra checks in about the Tough Mudder she’s preparing for, plus some travel horror stories including a potential stabbing at Disneyland, and white people taking a Black woman’s seat on a plane.   --   Please **rate and review** this podcast if you enjoyed it; reviews greatly help new listeners see this podcast is worth their time. Sisterhood
Lenya and Alex go deep into “what is sisterhood?”    Alexandra explains how she has no more time for insecure people. Lenya feels empowered and happy when she sees a woman out in her workout catsuit. Together they debate and discuss to get to what sisterhood really means.   There’s an acknowledgement that putting yourself out on social media in a manner that shows your true self, and not necessarily your online persona, can come with a lot of backlash, no matter the race. What does sisterhood tell us to do with this situation?   Listen in for this and more!   --   Please **rate and review** this podcast if you enjoyed it; reviews greatly help new listeners see this podcast is worth their time. Kids and Capitalism with Brendan Hutchins
Producer of the show Brendan Hutchins is back to talk about getting his vasectomy reversed, having babies in this current state of the world, and just an update on what's going on in his world.   Very quickly the topic turns to capitalism, as it often does, and we discuss the various things companies do because of the capitalistic incentives that drive all of their actions. There is also good conversation about charging your worth, and Lenya delighted by revealing she recently asked for a raise after starting The No Budget Babe course.   We shift over to discussing green energy and electric vehicles. Alexandra expresses she would feel guilty driving a fancy car, and Brendan counters that he just preordered a fancy electric car. Well, fancy and practical. There is a nice conversation about Tesla and never mentioned the CEO.   Brendan is getting married, so the ladies ask all about the planning and what's going to happen, and share horror stories of weddings they’ve attended.   --   Please **rate and review** this podcast if you enjoyed it; reviews greatly help new listeners see this podcast is worth their time. Ignore The Comments
Go anywhere on any social media platform, you’re going to find trolls, people who want to argue, and spew hate, and worse. What are you supposed to do with all that hate? You’re just trying to post a cute photo, or find out about local politics, or dancing with friends.    Alexandra and Lenya gather to discuss social media, give examples of people who are doing it right and doing it wrong, and wishcast their ideal way to remedy this problem. (Hint: it has to do with education and communication.)   But that's just part 1 of this episode. Part 2 is a check in on the New Year's resolutions, where Lenya describes how she’s been training and sleeping, and Alexandra covers her workouts and money making plans.   Lastly, the ladies have a question for you and would like your input: Should white get a capital W the way that Black is now getting capital B? Alexandra and Lenya have different starting opinions, and we want to keep this discussion going, so join the [Facebook Group](https://www.facebook.com/groups/665585734389981) and comment on the post about this episode how you think the capitalization should be, and why.   --   Please **rate and review** this podcast if you enjoyed it; reviews greatly help new listeners see this podcast is worth their time. The Olympics
Alex and Lenya have more to discuss about the Olympics!   Some people are saying they only turn on the Olympics to watch the Black athletes. What does this mean to them, and to the Black Community? Does it help? What if someone were to just watch the white athletes?    There’s more discussion about the media and their portrayal of Black olympians. And why, even though the Black equestrian community is growing, are there no Black equestrians at the Olympics?   This, and much more. The Delta Variant
Welcome back to our virtual living room, because we have a lot of race and womanhood to discuss. Alexandra and Lenya are back for a new season with guests and hard topic discussions, unafraid to say what they think and discussing what it all means. This episode covers the ostracization of Olympic athletes like Simone Biles and Naomi Osaka, and how when they try to do the right thing for them, their team, and their country, they get ridiculed and worse in the press, all for trying to do a thing while being a Black woman. And it doesn’t just stop with the Olympics for athletes, but they also discuss how contestants on the British Bake Off, and F1 racing, and anyone on the internet can be subjected to anonymous hateful comments in the name of “free speech”, and there’s a nice rant about how social media platforms like Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, and even TikTok delete posts and shadowban Black, Asain, and Indiginous creators, while condoning and allowing the hurtful posts against them. Boobs and What Your Mother Didn't Tell You
Lenya and Alexandra are back on their own again to focus on getting deep and gritty and talk about boobs, what their mothers never told them, and more. They discuss how sports bras, and bras in general, never fit right, either too big or too small, and if you want them to match your outfit, good luck. They both talk about when they first got their boobs, how their boobs affected them and the other girls around them in school, and how they have grown through the years. If you have boobs, come for the commiseration and to hear other stories about how difficult boobs can be. If you don’t have boobs, you need to listen to understand and get the full story about how difficult and othering and ostracizing boobs can be. In Conversation with Conner Gorry
This week we are in conversation with Alexandra’s long time friend Conner Born and raised in New York, Conner first came to Cuba in 1993 while finishing a Master’s degree in political science. In 2002, she moved to Havana permanently where she is an accredited journalist and freelance writer covering the Cuban health system, current events, the reform process, travel and tourism, and anything else that piques my interest – from dubious fashion and biotech to fidelity and the Harley biker scene. Conner writes books, essays and bad poetry...Available at your local independent bookseller (and also the online behemoth). Her blog [Here is Havana](https://hereishavana.com) has been called the best, no-punches-pulled writing about the island. In August 2013, she founded [Cuba Libro](Cubalibrohavana.com), the only English language bookstore/coffee house on the island, and a pioneer in ethically and socially responsible business practices. Conner reveals what it’s like to live as an outsider, and an insider, in Cuba, how the culture of beauty is so different, and how they embrace the full figured beauty, including cellulite and other things shunned by the American eye. She explains how the embargoes placed by the US have inhibited residents from getting the body care products they need, and now the Black community are making business to get some products in, and teaching classes on how to best use what is available. Can you be friends with a racist? With Brendan Hutchins
Can you be friends with a racist? What seems like it could be a simple yes or no question has layers and layers of unpacking and questions to be able to give a good answer. There’s context and understanding and compassion and self-preservation and self-care and so much more to consider. The audiosmith for this podcast, Brendan Hutchins, returns to join the conversation about race, religion, and much more with Alexandra and Lenya. The main topic is that Lenya has a colleague at work that voted for Trump in 2020, and is now unsure about how she feels in their relationship, but they have such a good time working together and there haven’t been issues of racism in the workplace. In Conversation with Young Advocate AB Tucker on Black Excellence, Fighting for the Wrongfully Convicted
AB Tucker is the gust today, and she tells the story of her brother being wrongfully accused of murder, and how that has pushed her down her own path for criminal justice, and to set right what was wronged. As AB tells the harrowing story of her brother being wrongfully accused of murder, Alexandra, Lenya, and AB touch on the prison industrial system, and how the system doesn’t care if they pick the wrong Black man, or boy, and the actual perpitrator is on the streets and could strike again, giving the system another opportunity to put a Black man behind bars; that’s actually the point. Alexandra uses her lawyer background to dissect the story of AB’s brother, and see where there were pitfalls, and maybe how to use them to change the case. But also she describes how difficult it still will be, a whole system working against them. In Conversation with Strongest UK Woman Andrea Thompson - Just Wow!
[Strongwoman Andrea Thompson](https://www.instagram.com/AndreaThompson_Strongwoman) joins the Women Bridging the Gap family to discuss race and womanhood, at the hearth level. She grew up in England and not knowing Black history, and in this episode describes what it’s like to not only be the top of her field in Strongman, but to be the only top Black woman, and yet still not get the recognition the way her White counterparts do. That systemic racism is so deep and so ingrained that when George Floyd was murdered and race became a conversation, it caused discussion, disagreement, and distance, leading to Andrea’s separation from her husband and father of her kids. Listen to hear her tell her story about that. Lenya and Alexandra discuss with Andrea more about the George Floyd murder, about the Derrick Chauvin trial, and what the reaction might be if the worst case becomes reality and he is found not guilty. You’re going to want to be prepared for this. There is also a deep discussion on body image, and a revelation that the most body shaming you’ll receive could be from yourself instead of from others. And talk about the COVID 15 and how people want to lose the weight they gained during the pandemic. In Conversation with Author Jen Dalton on Bullying, Writing, and Volunteering in Haiti
Long time friend Jen Dalton joins Alexandra and Lenya to discuss writing, where to get your news, bullying, and so much more. Jen is an author of a YA novel called [“Of Butterflies & Bullies”](https://www.butterfliesbullies.com/) available now on Amazon. Jen tells the story of how she wrote a novel about being bullied in school so that other kids getting bullied could have something to read and see that they are not alone, and they are not broken. There is also a deep discussion on the humanitarian crisis in Haiti, the struggles of White saviorism versus helping fellow humans, and how [Hearthstone Village](https://www.hearthstonevillageukiah.org/) is getting girls in Haiti to not only finish high school, but to go to college, too! Haiti has one of the lowest rates of girls in school, and a girls education is the greatest tool to get a community out of poverty. Jenny Dalton (you can call her Jen too) is an author, facilitator, coach, healer and polymath. She’s an ENFT, Sagittarius, Manifesting Generator. Her work in the world flows from facilitating healthier local food systems and fundraising for [an orphanage in Haiti](https://www.hearthstonevillageukiah.org/), to talking about her recently published book [“Of Butterflies & Bullies”](https://www.butterfliesbullies.com/) – a Judy Blume inspired story about her experience being bullied in 5th grade. She’s also starting what she calls the Better Friends Club which will create a space for grown women to heal from their own childhood bullying. And, Jenny is excited that she recently became a Kind Campaign ambassador which means she will be facilitating school assemblies to empower younger girls to talk about their own bullying experiences. As a woman who devours learning opportunities and reads voraciously, she leans towards topics of spirituality, quantum physics, shamanism, plant medicines, the mysteries of life and consciousness and post-apocalyptic survival stories. #### Links: [Jen Dalton’s Of Butterflies & Bullies](https://www.butterfliesbullies.com/) [Stephen King’s On Writing](https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/10569.On_Writing) [Kitchen Table Consulting, LLC](https://www.kitchentableconsulting.com/) [Love in Action Coaching](https://www.loveinactioncoaching.com/) [Hearthstone Village](https://www.hearthstonevillageukiah.org/) #### Why not to follow Shaun King: [She Writes To Live - The Shaun King We’re not Talking About](https://shewritestolive.medium.com/the-shaun-king-were-not-talking-about-84c46ab40079) [A Community Word About Shaun King](https://medium.com/@concernedcommunity2019/a-community-word-about-shaun-king-sitdownshaun-4be75abc1f37) [deray on Shaun King](https://twitter.com/deray/status/1265253718016040960?lang=en) #### Who to follow instead for great resources on the movement: [deray mckesson on Instagram](https://instagram.com/iamderay?igshid=n3mnyjpgt40s) [Tamika Mallory](https://instagram.com/tamikadmallory?igshid=6sva4ptfb743) [Brittany Packnet Cunningham](https://instagram.com/mspackyetti?igshid=sqp2d9dphbnz) [America Hates Us](https://www.instagram.com/p/CNnGqVUgkzA/?igshid=1d0gvd3ocp70t) [Chnge](https://www.instagram.com/p/CNnO2IWADLI/?igshid=1wy4128cme63d) -- Please **rate and review** this podcast if you enjoyed it; reviews greatly help new listeners see this podcast is worth their time.
