You provide the modern and I’m a long time supporter of Alan OLeary and his trad podcast on liveIreland.com which I think has hit hard times.  He has great connections to the old timers.  Don’t know if you’ve heard of him but any visibility you could give him would be great.  He’s always asking to share with friends but that would require me making friends. We are enjoying the music of the women of Celtic music this week on the podcast. There are some who continue to devalue women and strip them of their rights. But this podcast believes strongly that women too need representation. That’s why I play at least one podcast a quarter highlighting the women of Celtic music. And I’ll be honest. That’s not nearly enough. FairPle is an organization based in Ireland that seeks to achieve gender balance in the production, performance, promotion, and development of Irish traditional and folk music. They advocate for equal opportunity and balanced representation for all. A recent look at the top festivals in Ireland revealed that less than a quarter of all musicians featured at festivals were women. Headliners are even less. And I get it. Again, I do this feature on women in Celtic music every quarter. That’s not a lot. I hope to increase the number of these shows and to continue to highlight Celtic women. But it’s a tough process with my time constraints. If you have ideas or suggestions or want to help, make something happen, please drop me a line. And make sure you sign up for the FairPle.com website for more details about the work they are doing. I talk about a song called “Lads in the Shire”. The lyrics were inspired by Wolf Loescher’s song. Lissa is a fantastic Celtic musician from Vermont. She has a great newsletter where she inspires you to practice. In one email, she was talking about Summer Road Trips. She mentioned the Sustainable Touring Arts Coalition on how to make your travel as sustainable as possible. Her friend Laura Cortese toured plastic free. And Lissa did a tour with her husband and son on a bicycle! I’ll let her tell the story 41:28 - Lissa Schneckenburger "The 11th Labor of Hercules" from Thunder in My Arms 44:40 – SUSTAINABILITY I found Lissa’s story extremely inspiring. Obviously, I’m concerned about our carbon impact on the climate which is why I mentioned the Carbon Almanac in a past podcast. Her story got me excited. I went down a rabbit hole looking into sustainability in the music industry. I found a few resources, but not much. So I’ve been looking into ways that I can make my music career and podcasting career more sustainable.  One of the coolest things that Lissa Schneckenburger’s story inspired me to do is to make my own bike gig plans. With any luck, I will announce at least one bike show this Fall. I’d love your thoughts and feedback. Have you seen any Celtic musicians working hard to support our environment? What did they do? Please email me. 46:21 - Old Man Flanagan's Ghost "May" from Sociable 51:22 - Harmundi "Farewell To Thom" from Um Orvalho Boreal 55:56 - Jamison Celtic Rock "The Most Irish Girl in America" from Heyhowrya 59:07 - CLOSING 59:46 - Niamh Parsons “Green Grass It Grows Bonny” from In My Prime The Irish & Celtic Music Podcast was produced by Marc Gunn, The Celtfather. There are over 300 amazingly generous people who pledge $1, $5, $10, $25 or more each and every week to support the Irish & Celtic Music Podcast. I am super grateful to each for their generosity. But sometimes, I screw up. I forget to charge for an episode. That happened this week. The money came in from last month’s Patreon pledges. I was $500 short what I normally get each month. As you might imagine, I was a bit shocked. I realized immediately that I didn’t charge for one of the episodes last month. That shortfall has a big impact on my life and business. I emailed my patrons and let them know about the problem. I was flooded with small donations and large ones from people who wanted to help make up that shortfall. Four days of near - continuous music on something like a dozen stages. Everything from local traditional bands to nationally known Celtic rock acts like Scythian and the Elders. There's also a cultural village, set and ceili dance pavilion, theater, Irish language lessons, even currach boat races and Irish dogs. I think it would be a great way for you to make contacts for getting new music, and maybe find a way to promote the podcast as well. Thanks for your long commitment to the show!" Teri Hill emailed from Cedar City, Utah: "Hi Marc, I stumbled onto your podcast not too long ago (within the last 6 - 10 months or so) and fell in love with the music. I started listening to the beginning of the podcast and I'm working my way to the recent shows. I'm currently at episode 201 (2015). I've enjoyed every minute! I'll be caught up to the newer episodes soon! Slainte!" alec felinus emailed: "Hi Marc, I'm afraid I've had to stop listening to the show. Don't get me wrong, I love the music, but the Stitcher app stopped working for me and I switched to Spotify. I have searched repeatedly, but can't get The Irish Celtic Music Podcast on the new app. Is there any way you could put it out on the Spotify platform? I would think that it could only increase the listenership."

Email a voicemail message to celticpodcast@gmail.com Michael Finlay emailed a photo with a great story: "Hi Marc, so while I was listening to the podcast my kid ran inside telling me that our neighbor had come looking for help. She had found a kitten in the engine compartment of her truck. A tiny, terrified, little thing we figured was about 7 weeks old. The neighbor couldn't keep her (allergies), so we took her in. On the way to her doctor's appointment I played the show, hoping to calm her down. It did not work. Aside from a minor ear infection, and being a bit thin for her age, she was given a clean bill of health. I now have a new baby, little Minka. And thank the gods, she's finally putting on some weight. And I think she likes the show, since when I was cooking recently she tried to climb up my leg. But really that was either your playlist or the bacon. Any way, your work has been the soundtrack for the arrival of a new bundle of joy into my life. I will try to send a picture of sweet Minka." Stephen Dunford emailed: “Happy July/ End of Pride Month. Hi Marc,  Thank you for a great show, Love the music and love the vibe. Listening to your podcast got me through the pandemic with a smile on my face. Ha What am I doing today?  Well... I am listening to your podcast while working from home. I started listening to your podcast while I was working in the office in a different career in fashion, as mentioned before your podcast helped me sort some things out about what I truly enjoy in music and life. Music gives life -  if you get my drift. Since then I switched careers in UX design which allows me to work remotely where I can listen to your music freely around the house wherever I want. Anyhow, my hubby and I are going to Ireland, Scotland, and England for our delayed honeymoon at the end of August.  We are calling it "Discovering our roots". Since I am of English Irish descent and he is American of Scottish/ mixed descent. We can't wait. Needless to say, I will be on the lookout for local music, but in the meantime, we will be listening to your podcast along the winding roads of our ancestors. Take care and thanks for your podcast.” Woodland Folk emailed photos of Courting and TREES And finally, here's a run I did while listening to the Irish & Celtic Music Podcast, on my way to Indianapolis.

Our core instrumentation is fiddle, concertina, and mandolin, with the occasional guest guitarist or percussionist. With our Ohio - based guitarist Rick Nelson, we recorded a 6 track EP called Flora, which we'd like to offer you to play on your podcast. Thanks much and all the best! I love the music/podcast. I hope you and your family are well.   My Daughter and I went down to the KC SPD parade. Sounded like the Atlanta SPD parade was a cold one - Kansas City had wonderful weather, Sunny 74 that day. Estimated over 400,000 attended the parade that day. I made a wonderful corned beef and cabbage dinner that night - so good. I am hoping to catch a live show one day, probably in Texas as it's closer to KC. Also hoping you'll be a performer at the Kansas City Irish Fest Labor Day weekend (Sept.) Slainte”

She did her first Feis this month as a beginner and came in third place for Light Jig among 11 other kids. We were pretty excited. Before the Feis, I had a LOT of questions. I was not raised on Irish dance. I really know nothing about it. So last month, I contacted Emma Burke of Atlanta Irish Dance to find out more. Emma Burke was born in Dublin, Ireland and grew up in Atlanta. She is a former litigation attorney in the area and a classically trained flautist. Now she is co - founder of Atlanta Irish dance and is a certified Irish dance teacher and internationally certified Irish dance adjudicator, which allows her to judge Irish dance competitions world wide. During her Irish dancing career, Emma competed all over the world, winning titles throughout. Emma is also a four time Southern Region Champion, consistently placed top 5 in the North American Nationals, and competed in the World Championships of Irish dance many times where her highest placement was 13th, earning her a coveted World Medal. I asked her to tell me more about Irish dance. 41:52 - WHAT IS IRISH DANCE? Since I also wanted to know what to expect at a Feis, I asked Emma what a Feis is and what happens at a Burke Connolly Feis. I’ll let her tell you more about it. 45:51 - MORE ABOUT BURKE CONNOLLY FEIS If you want to learn more about Irish dance, the instruments they play and the types of dances they do, make sure you join us on Patreon. I will release an extended version of our interview in a week or so for Song Hengers. 48:34 - Clover's Revenge "Raggle Taggle Gypsy" from Gotta Get O'Raggednized 52:29 - Sons of Malarkey "Tripping Father" from Presenting Sons of Malarkey 55:53 - Hugh Morrison "Down the Dunes" from Lift Your Head Up 59:51 - Highlander Celtic Rock Band Australia "The Craic Fiddle" from North of the Wall 1:04:19 - CLOSING 1:06:00 - Clann An Drumma "Lion Tyrant" from Order of the Stag The Irish & Celtic Music Podcast was edited by Mitchell Petersen with Graphics by Miranda Nelson Designs. I’m a musician and podcaster. I want to introduce you to some amazing Celtic bands and musicians. The artists in this show need your support, which you can do by buying their music. You can find a link to all of the artists, along with show times and chapters for each song when you visit our website at celticmusicpodcast.com. You can also support this podcast on Patreon. We have another Celtic Story today. That’s where a band shares a story behind their music. This time it’s by the Celtic Rock band Syr. They share the challenges of writing a song in a non - native language, Scots Gaelic. Oh! And you may also notice I’m letting others introduce the latest episode. If you would like to do so, email me. I’ll send you instructions. And if you’re band, I can also send instructions on how to submit music to the podcast and how to share your own Celtic Story with the show. BUY SELCOUTH BY MARC GUNN My latest CD features Sci F’Irish music. That means it is original songs fusing pop culture themes with Irish drinking songs. There are some traditional music on the album. But mostly, it features songwriting by Marc Gunn with guests including: Screeched Inn, The Muckers, Jamie Haeuser, Sam Gillogly, Nathan Deese, and Mikey Mason. Selcouth means, “when everything is strange and different, yet you find it marvelous anyway.” The album is not completely Celtic and it’s not just science fiction and fantasy. It’s a fusion of the two. It’s heartfelt and a lot of fun. It’s now on sale in my Bandcamp store. Check out Selcouth now. THANK YOU PATRONS OF THE PODCAST! Beautiful sunny (but cold), listening to episode 548  -  very nice" Michael R. Gorman emailed: "Marc, I hope this email does not come across as too strange, but before about 45 minutes ago, I had never heard of you. I was searching Pandora for some traditional Celtic music to play as a background to a personal spring/renewal ritual I felt compelled to do on this cool California night. When I happened upon your Podcast #196, I immediately knew I had my background music. I thought your talking would be a distraction, but it was not at all, like an extension of the music of the ancestors. I won't go into detail about my ritual tonight, other than to say this ritual marks the end of a very long period of trial and pain in one of my life's dark valleys, but the thing about valleys is that there are always the hills beyond to climb if you can just keep walking. I did, and tonight is like a new birth from the cauldron of the Cailleach. I have not cut my hair in ten years until tonight (by no means short, but shorter), a show of faith in renewed growth, and to offer a red - blonde lock as tribute to the ancestors. I don't know much about you or what your spirituality may be, but I felt the need to thank you for being with me on this small milestone in my journey. I look forward to getting to know you better through your work. And thank you. Blessings of the Tuatha de,”

EATING HUMBLE PIE FOR ST PATRICK’S DAY First let me start with an apology. Last episode, I shared a pet peeve. I said Facebook was my least favorite place to get comments. That’s true. But according to my website, I was wrong. There was some old info that said EXACTLY that. Ugh. I screwed up. IF YOU WANT TO ENJOY SOME HUMBLE PIE WITH ME… I have two St Patrick’s Day celebrations happening in the Atlanta area this weekend. On Saturday, March 14, I’m at Ironshield Brewing in Lawrenceville, GA. On Sunday, March 15, I’m at Three Taverns Brewery in Decatur, GA. You can come eat some humble pie with me… or at least toast a pint of beer with me. I’d love to meet you. DO YOU NEED A GUEST ON YOUR PODCAST? I’d love to share my love of Celtic culture through music with your podcast. Or we can talk about science fiction, fantasy, podcasting, or even cats. I’d love to chat with you. If you know a podcaster who might be interested, drop me a line. ST PATRICK’S DAY ON PUB SONGS & STORIES The next Pub Songs & Stories podcast is a packed extra long episode for St Patrick’s Day. Jon Pilatzke shares some stories about the late Paddy Maloney of The Chieftains. The Muckers wrote a song on a Flogging Molly cruise. Guilty pleasures come in many shapes. What’s mine? Promote Celtic culture through music at http://celticmusicpodcast.com/. WELCOME TO IRISH & CELTIC MUSIC * Helping you celebrate Celtic culture through music. I am Marc Gunn. I’m a musician and podcaster. If you’re new to the podcast, I share my love of Irish and Celtic music from around the globe with you. The artists in this show need your support which you can do by buying their music. You can find a link to all of the artists, along with show times and chapters for each song when you visit our website at celticmusicpodcast.com. You can also support this podcast on Patreon. SPEAKING OF PATREON… I don’t know if you knew this. But I donate 10% of all of the money that is earned on Patreon to Celtic Non - Profits. I do the same with our Celtic compilation CDs. The money goes largely to Celtic festivals where we promote Celtic culture through music. I keep track of the donations to all the festivals and organizations on our website. Well, I say that, but I hadn’t updated that list in about four years, even though I continued to make donations. We donated $4200 last year to different festivals. To date, we’ve donated over $45,000. You can find the complete list of Celtic Non - Profit donations on our website. PET PEEVE I have a pet peeve to share. I got a Facebook message from someone representing a Celtic artist. They said, “I see your preferred method of contact is Facebook”. Let me be clear. Facebook is my LAST method of contact. It is the #1 place I promote the podcast. But I do not like Facebook. It also shows a complete disinterest in finding out how to contact me. Don’t get me wrong. You are welcome to message me there. I started looking at messages recently after 3 - 5 years of forgetting I could. But I still prefer a direct email. VOTE IN THE CELTIC TOP 20 FOR 2022 This is our way of finding the best songs and artists each year. You can vote for as many songs and tunes that inspire you in each episode. Your vote helps me create next year's Best Celtic music of 2022 episode.  Vote Now! WHAT’S NEW IN IRISH & CELTIC MUSIC: BEST OF 2022 Two weeks after the episode is launched, I compile the latest Celtic Top 20 votes to update a playlist on Spotify and Amazon Music. These are the results of your voting. You can help these artists out by following the playlists and adding tracks you love to your playlists. The newest band added to the playlist: Poitin Band, Kilmaine Saints, The Rogues, The Carroll Sisters Listen on Spotify and Amazon Music. TRAVEL WITH CELTIC INVASION VACATIONS Every year, I take a small group of Celtic music fans on the relaxing adventure of a lifetime. We don't see everything. Instead, we stay in one area. We get to know the region through its culture, history, and legends. You can join us with an auditory and visual adventure through podcasts and videos. Learn more about the invasion at http://celticinvasion.com/ WE HAVE A COMPANION PODCAST Pub Songs & Stories is a Virtual Public House for musicians to share the stories and inspiration behind their music. I ask musicians on this show to share a story about a song or tune, from a gig, or maybe even just a piece of Celtic history that they love. I share their story and the related song in the podcast. I also share songs from the Best of 2022 playlist. And of course, I talk about some of my songs and what’s new with me. Just like this show, it is free to subscribe. THANK YOU PATRONS OF THE PODCAST! Because of Your kind and generous support, this show comes out at least four times a month. Your generosity funds the creation, promotion and production of the show. It allows us to attract new listeners and to help our community grow. A super special thanks to our newest Patrons: Shelley W, Andrew P Now I mentioned the show comes out at least four times a month. Typically, I plan to take a week off every quarter. But the podcast lost a few patrons over the past month. Meanwhile, our expenses went up last year. I have an audio engineer, graphic artist, social media person, plus there’s advertising expenses and I buy the music from all of the artists who complete the permission form. So I think it’s time for a new patronage milestone. The next off week is June 2. I want to do a very special 2 - 3 hour episode. I’m not sure of the theme. I’ll let you know in the coming weeks. But I set the goal at $850 per episode. That means we need to raise $70 per episode. That will cover the new expenses. That’s about 15 new people subscribing on Patreon. I know that’s a pretty tough goal to reach. But you have until May 1 to sign up. If we can do that, then you will get that incredible show on June 2. Oh! And every patron will get a bumper sticker as well as a small way of saying thanks. You also get to hear episodes before regular listeners. Any amount is great. You can pledge a dollar or more per episode and cap how much you want to spend each month over on Patreon. You can also get music - only episodes when you become a Song Henger. You can become a generous Patron of the Podcast on Patreon at SongHenge.com. #celticmusic #irishmusic #celticmusicpodcast I WANT YOUR FEEDBACK What are you doing today while listening to the podcast? You can send a written comment along with a picture of what you're doing while listening. Email a voicemail message to celticpodcast@gmail.com Bonnie Menard replied on a Facebook post: "Marc, I just have to tell you. I was listening to another Irish & Celtic Music Podcast at work and then I found yours. This week I switched to Pub Songs and Stories and I am loving it. On both your podcasts all the music and artists are great, but my favorite is you. By Amazing Grace and the Mingulay Boat song are amazing. Such a powerful voice. I can't wait to find the time to visit your websites and order a cd. Thank you for all you do." Moxie LaBouche messaged on Facebook: "Love the show.  In the warm months I listen on the weekends while working in the yard or cutting firewood and in the winter I listen while doing the grocery shopping. 🙂. If you ever need a female voice for a bumper or anything, let me know." Amy Sherman emailed: "Hi Mark! We’ve been enjoying the podcast as always! The episodes and the new Spotify playlist make great soundtracks to backyard cooking fires and star gazing. After listening to Dierdre Graham on your podcast, I found her podcast called Gaelic Song Stories. I haven’t listened to all of the episodes yet, but it’s interesting for anyone who wants to hear Gaelic, Gaelic translations, and Gaelic song history. She has some neat interviews, and listening to the background of the song stories helps put the lyrics in historical timelines. Ok -  I’m off to re - listen to the latest episode so I can go vote for the playlist. Thanks Mark! " She also commented on Patreon: "Even if some bands don’t make it to the Spotify list, voting makes me take a closer look at the artist name and remember it better. I’ve followed a lot of new bands on Spotify because of this new poll."

First of all, it's amazing you are now forty - two episodes PAST 500! Wow. So many thanks. Second, you ask what are we doing while listening to the podcast. Well the other day I was running south of Huntington Beach pier, and oddly for such a lovely day, as you can see by the attached picture nobody was there! The podcast made some lovely accompaniment as I ran with or sometimes carrying a small Aussiedoodle puppy. On a different occasion I put your podcast playing from my phone as I climbed Angel's Landing in Zion National Park. It was a great day as well and perfect lively music to motivate me up the trail to the glorious view at the top. Thanks Mark! Cheers," Alina Larson wrote on Facebook: “I love The Fire!
