chá preto is the pseudonym of João Gabriel Fonseca - who, like many others, started to rethink some life choices during the COVID pandemic, in 2020. The singer, born in Salvador, after acting as a freelancer musician for over 10 years, playing with a large array of different acts and winning awards for his compositions and arrangements, decided that it was finally time to take the wheel and release his first solo-work, with references that comes from indie pop, jazz, Brazilian music, Japanese neo-rock and even PlayStation 1 music.
chá preto (meaning black tea in Portuguese) directs, arranges, composes, plays and produces his first EP WABI, originating from his apartment in São Paulo. The singer follows the steps of modern artists who try a little bit of everything, and his music is better known for its unique aesthetic that blends retro synthesizers with jazzy harmonies, rich vocal arrangements and a Brazilian touch with percussions and a tropical atmosphere that surrounds the recordings.
