Gorgoroth is a Norwegian black metal band from Bergen, formed in 1992 by Infernus, Hat, and Goatpervertor. The group's name is derived from J.R.R. Tolkien's novel The Lord of the Rings. The group released its debut demo, A Sorcery Written in Blood, in 1993, followed by its first studio album, Pentagram, in 1994 under Embassy Productions. The band gained underground notoriety with its raw and old-school black metal sound. In 1996, the group released the album Antichrist, which further solidified its reputation. After signing with Nuclear Blast Records in 1997, the band released Destroyer in 1998, featuring new vocalist Gaahl on the title track. The group's musical style evolved with subsequent albums, including Incipit Satan (2000), Twilight of the Idols (2003), and Ad Majorem Sathanas Gloriam (2006). On October 18, 2015, bassist Bøddel died of cancer. Throughout its career, the group faced legal disputes over the band's name and logo, culminating in a court victory for Infernus on March 10, 2009.
