Deborah Lynn Friedman wurde am 23. Februar 1951 in Utica, New York, geboren und war eine US-amerikanische Singer-Songwriterin jüdischer religiöser Musik. Anfang der 1970er Jahre begann sie im Ferienlager „Olin Sang Ruby Union Institute“ mit dem Songwriting, was 1972 zu ihrem ersten Album „Sing Unto God“ führte. Es folgte „Not By Might Not By Power“ (1974). Ihre Vertonung von „Mi Shebeirach“ fand in reformierten, konservativen und orthodoxen Gemeinden breite Verbreitung. Am 9. Januar 2011 starb sie nach einem Kampf gegen eine Lungenentzündung in Mission Viejo, Kalifornien; ihr Vermächtnis wurde gewürdigt, indem die School of Sacred Music des Hebrew Union College in die Debbie Friedman School of Sacred Music umbenannt wurde.
