He achieved a breakthrough in 1965 with the single "Preste Atenção" and gained widespread fame as an idol of the Jovem Guarda movement. Cardoso worked as a presenter on radio and television, appearing on shows such as Os Adoráveis Trapalhões and Os Galãs cantam e dançam na TV. In 1972 a severe assault left him nearly blind in his right eye. Throughout his career, he recorded over 900 songs across 84 albums.
