Patterson Hood ist seit 1996 Sänger, Gitarrist und Komponist der Band Drive-By Truckers und hat auch eine Solokarriere im Bereich Alternative Country gestartet. Der am 24. März 1964 in Muscle Shoals, Alabama, geborene Sohn von David Hood, dem Bassisten der berühmten Muscle Shoals Rhythm Section, wuchs in einer musikfreundlichen Atmosphäre auf und gründete bereits 1985 seine erste Band, Adam's House Cat, mit seinem Highschool-Kameraden Mike Cooley. Obwohl sie unterschiedliche Wege eingeschlagen hatten, trafen sich Hood und Cooley 1996 in Athens wieder und beschlossen, eine neue, erfolgreiche Band namens Drive-By Truckers zu gründen. Nachdem vier Alben aufgenommen worden waren und die Band noch nicht in die Charts eingestiegen war, verspürte Patterson Hood das Bedürfnis, parallel dazu seine eigene Karriere zu starten, und arbeitete gemeinsam an zwei Aufnahmen: The Dirty South von Drive-By Truckers und seiner ersten Sammlung, dem Konzeptwerk Killers and Stars, das im Mai 2004 veröffentlicht wurde. Inspiriert von Geschichten über Serienmörder und anderen düsteren Themen, legte Hood 2009 mit dem selbstproduzierten Murdering Oscar (And Other Love Songs) nach. Zwischen Solo- und Bandtourneen oder der Zusammenarbeit mit Booker T. Jones und Alice Cooper ließ sich der Songwriter von einem unvollendeten Roman inspirieren, um die Songs für sein drittes Album Heat Lightning Rumble in the Distance (2012) zu entwickeln. Auf einer Tournee begleitete er eine Band namens The Downtown Rumblers und später The Downtown 13, zu der u. a. Mike Mills (R.E.M.), Todd Nance (Widespread Panic) und Musiker von Drive-By Truckers oder aus seinem Umfeld gehörten. Es vergingen mehrere Jahre, bis er bei einem Konzert mit Mike Cooley und Jason Isbell wieder auftauchte, das unter dem Titel Live at the Shoals Theatre, June 15, 2014, veröffentlicht wurde. Im Februar 2025 erschien sein fünftes Album Exploding Trees & Airplane Screams, das von Chris Funk von The Decemberists produziert wurde.
