The Swirlies, an American indie rock band, formed in Boston in 1990 when guitarists Seana Carmody and Damon Tutunjian met through a mutual friend. Initially aiming to form a Go-Go's cover band, they shifted to creating original music characterized by shifting tempos and loud vibrato guitars played through numerous effects pedals. In 1992, they signed to Taang! Records and released their debut mini-album What to Do About Them. The following year saw the release of their album Blonder Tongue Audio Baton, which blended shoegaze, twee pop, electronica, and lo-fi music. The band underwent several lineup changes throughout the 1990s, with notable members including Andy Bernick on bass and Ben Drucker on drums. In 1998, they released Strictly East Coast Sneaky Flute Music, featuring collaborations with producers like Rich Costey and DJ Spooky.
