Richard Adeney, born 25 January 1920 in London was a British flautist, son of painter Bernard Adeney. Educated at Dartington Hall School and the Royal College of Music, he joined the London Philharmonic Orchestra in 1941 as second flute and later became principal flute. In 1950, he co‑founded Melos Ensemble and performed with the English Chamber Orchestra until the 1970s. He worked with Benjamin Britten, playing in the premieres of War Requiem (1962) and Curlew River (1964), and recorded Bach’s Brandenburg Concertos under Britten. He died in Paddington, 16 December 2010.
