Claude Monteux, born on October 15, 1920 in Brookline, Massachusetts, was an American flutist and conductor. He began his musical studies in France during the 1920s, studying flute with Georges Laurent of the Boston Symphony Orchestra. Monteux performed under notable conductors such as Arturo Toscanini and Igor Stravinsky, and played with orchestras including the London Symphony Orchestra and the Metropolitan Opera Orchestra. In 1953, he became the conductor of the Columbus Symphony Orchestra until 1956. From 1959 to 1975, Monteux served as the permanent conductor and music director of the Hudson Valley Philharmonic Society. Notable recordings include Flute Concerto In D Major / Suite No.2 In B Minor (1964). Monteux passed away on February 22, 2013, in Sacramento, California.
