The Sea and Cake is an American indie rock band formed in Chicago in 1994 by Archer Prewitt from The Coctails, Sam Prekop, Eric Claridge from Shrimp Boat, and John McEntire from Tortoise. Their album The Sea and Cake was released in 1994, followed by Nassau and The Biz in 1995. The band is known for blending indie rock with post-rock, jazz, samba, and bossa nova influences. The band contributed "The Fontana" to the AIDS benefit album Red Hot + Bothered in 1995. In 1997, they released The Fawn, incorporating electronic instrumentation. Notable albums include Oui (2000), One Bedroom (2003), and Everybody (2007). They went on hiatus from 2004 to 2007, resuming with Car Alarm in 2008 and Any Day in 2018.
