Dissection was a Swedish extreme metal band from Strömstad, formed in 1989 by guitarist, vocalist, and songwriter Jon Nödtveidt and bassist Peter Palmdahl. Its debut demo, The Grief Prophecy, was recorded in December 1990 and released in February 1991. The band's first studio album, The Somberlain, was released on December 3, 1993, followed by its second album, Storm of the Light's Bane, on November 17, 1995. The group disbanded in 1997 due to the arrest of Nödtveidt on December 18, 1997, and subsequent imprisonment for complicity in the murder of Josef ben Meddour on July 22, 1997. Following his release, Nödtveidt reformed the band in 2004, releasing the EP Maha Kali on November 10, 2004, and its final studio album, Reinkaos, on April 30, 2006, before disbanding that June. Nödtveidt committed suicide on August 13, 2006. The band played a central role in the Swedish black metal and death metal scenes, particularly through the influence of its first two albums.
