Still In New York, EP2, out August 23rd!
mal sounds creates moments, spaces & soundscapes. His “vibe” is a blend of indie, R&B, and electronic music, carefully curated to evoke a daydream-like headspace. Hailing from Brooklyn, he carries with him a deep sense of calm, cultivated over years spent observing the world around him. He’s quick to repeat a mantra when discussing his music: “this is meditation, not escapism”. These lush atmospheres are invitations to explore one’s own mind, not escape it.
In 2021, mal arrived with his debut EP: Freaks and Wild Things. The project was conceptualized & recorded in Spain, during the covid pandemic. Mal was stuck abroad with his laptop & $250 worth of recording equipment. He began posting songs from the EP online as a way to find community, and was eventually discovered by Terrible Records, who picked up & distributed the project. The EP featured production from the likes of Joe Valle (of Wet) & Junius Karr (the Hellp, Paris Michael).
Since returning home to NYC, mal has continued to flesh out his world, expanding his live show (@ The Sultan Room, Baby’s All Right, Public Records, Heaven Can Wait) & virtual presence. He went viral on Instagram in the fall of 2022 while promoting his irresistibly catchy “VVS” (2,000,000+ across streaming platforms), and then spent much of 2023 off socials, developing his upcoming EP, Still In New York. Thrifting genres like he does clothes, the main constants to his sound are his signature bass voice, euphoric production sense, and atmospheres for days.
mal sounds' upcoming EP, "Still In New York" draws on a variety of inspirations, ranging from the r&b tradition to ambient music & shoegaze. In a world that grows exponentially faster each day, the EP is a call to embrace stillness and relinquish control. It arrives 8.23.24.
