Hailing from Brooklyn, New York, where they were born in 2016, synthpop/indie pop band Nation of Language formed with two former members of The Static Jacks, Ian Richard Devaney (vocals, guitar, percussion) and Michael Sue-Poi (bass), as well as keyboardist Aidan Noell (synthesizer). Unlike The Static Jacks, Devaney's new project turned to synth pop, releasing several singles before the May 2020 release of their first self-produced album, Introduction, Presence, whose promotion was disrupted by its release in the midst of the Covid-19 pandemic. The band reunited again to record its successor A Way Forward (November 2021), which reached No. 13 in the UK independent charts. Appearing on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert in January 2022, Nation of Language undergoes a change with the replacement of Sue-Poi by Alex MacKay (ex-Cutouts), before going on tour. Returning in 2023 with the single "Sole Obsession", the trio score a viral hit with "Weak in Your Light", included on the third album Strange Disciple (September 2023), charting at No. 12 in the UK independent charts. In 2025, the group, which has produced its own versions of tracks by Pixies ("Gouge Away"), Broken Social Scene ("Stars and Sons") and The Replacements ("Androgynous"), signs the album Dance Called Memory, from which the hit "Inept Apollo" is taken , ranked no. 27 in the Adult Alternative Airplay charts.
