Jamaican singer and DJ
musician Mavado is best known for his dancehall and reggae music. Mavado (real
name David Constantine Brooks) was born on 30 November, 1980, in Kingston,
Jamaica, and takes his stage name after the Swiss watch company Movado, ultimately
altering the spelling. Mentored by personal idol, Bounty Killer, Mavado
eventually caught the eye of dancehall music business mogul Julian Jones-Griffith,
who would eventually become his manager. His first single (and signature
track), "Real McKoy", was
released in 2005 before his debut album, Gangsta
for Life: The Symphony of David Brooks, saw the light of day in 2007 via VP
Records. "Real McKoy" also
featured on the soundtrack for popular video game series, Grand Theft Auto IV. He released his second album, Mr. Brooks...A Better Tomorrow, in 2009
and the following year he won the EME award for Male Singjay of the Year.
Mavado has also featured on numerous tracks as guest vocalist for the likes of
Iggy Azalea, DJ Khaled, XXXTentacion, and Lil' Kim. In 2011 he signed with DJ
Khaled's We the Best Music Group, and appeared in the 2012 film, Shotta 2,
alongside Ky-Mani Marley and Spragga Benz. In 2020, Mavado released the single “Enemy Line”, a so-called diss track targetting Drake, after the Canadian artist called him out in a previous song.
