Although he achieved tremendous commercial success as the frontman of the multi-platinum rock band Matchbox Twenty, Rob Thomas has received his most significant artistic recognition outside of the band. In 2000, he won three Grammy Awards as the co-writer and singer on Santana's hit song "Smooth," which topped the Billboard Hot 1oo for 12 weeks in 1999 and 2000. Thomas was still in his twenties at the time, having been born on February 14, 1972, in Landstuhl, West Germany. He was an army brat, born to a GI father who brought the family back to the States when Thomas was six months old. After forming Matchbox Twenty in 1995, Thomas became one of the most recognizable voices on FM radio during the late-1990s and early-2000s, an era that found the band releasing multi-platinum hits like "Unwell," "Push," "3AM," and "If You're Gone." Thomas also earned hits as a solo artist, beginning with "Smooth" and continuing with his debut solo album, ...Something to Be, which reached Number 1 on the Billboard 200 in 2005. 2009's Cradlesong, 2015's The Great Unknown, and 2019's Chip Tooth Smile all followed. The holiday album Something About Christmas Time was released in 2021, giving Thomas a Top 10 hit on the Adult Contemporary Songs chart with "Small Town Christmas" and a Top 30 hit with "A New York Christmas."
