Young novelist and musician, singer and guitarist Mikel Jollett formed the band The Airborne Toxic Event in Los Angeles in 2006 with Steven Chen (guitar, keyboards), Noah Harmon (bass), Anna Bulbrook (keyboards, viola) and Daren Taylor (drums). Combining the foundations of 1980s post-punk with electronic and classical elements, the band, which takes its name from a passage in Don DeLillo's novel White Noise, first recorded the track "Does This Mean You're Moving On?" and a self-titled EP in 2007, before signing with independent label Majordomo Records. Noted by critics from the first album bearing its name, The Airbone Toxic Event placed the title "Sometime Around Midnight" in the Billboard Modern Rock charts and then worked on the album All at Once, released in 2011. In 2013, its successor Such Hot Blood ranked 27th on the Billboard 200, making the group one of the most prominent in the American alternative rock scene. The following year, bassist Adrian Rodriguez replaced Noah Harmon and participated in the sessions for the electro-pop and rock album Dope Machines (2015), immediately followed by Songs of God and Whiskey, available only on the group's website. After the departure of Anna Bulbrook in 2019, the album Hollywood Park followed and the arrival of violinist Mimi Peschet for the next one, Glory (2024), which renewed the musical framework of the group.
