A thunderous, uncompromising band, the Black Crowes became big stars in the 1990s on the back of an incessant touring schedule and full-blooded stage shows which earned them comparisons with the Rolling Stones. With a musical heart deeply rooted in the blues rock bands of the 1970s, brothers Chris and Rich Robinson joined forces with drummer Steve Gorman to perfect a trailblazing retro rock sound, originally operating under the name of Mr Crowe's Garden. Going through a succession of personnel changes, they released their first album Shake Your Money Maker in 1990, which included the hit singles "Hard to Handle," "She Talks to Angels" and "Jealous Again," and the album went on to sell over three million copies. The band toured constantly through the 1990s with a succession of successful albums like The Southern Harmony and Musical Companion (1992), Amorica (1994) and Three Snakes and One Charm (1996). And they took a break in the early 2000s as both Chris and Rich Robinson worked on solo projects, but reformed for a tour with Tom Petty in 2005, resulting in more albums including Before The Frost...Until The Freeze (2008) and the acoustic double album Croweology (2010). Their fourth live album, Wiser for the Time, followed in 2013 but the band announced their decision to split up in 2015. However, the brothers were able to patch things up and reunite the band four years later, revealing the reunion on The Howard Stern Show along with their plans to stage a tour to mark the 30th anniversary of Shake Your Money Maker. They performed at New York's Bowery Ballroom with a new backing band in tow before the COVID-19 pandemic derailed the rest of the tour. Rescheduled dates followed in 2021 along with the announcement of a 30th Anniversary re-issue of Shake Your Money Maker, accompanied by previously unreleased track "Charming Mess." Comprising the Black Crowes' take on classics including the Rolling Stones' "Rocks Off" and David Bowie's "Moonage Daydream," 2022 EP 1972 contained some of their first new recordings since reforming in 2019. A brand new album emerged in 2024, their tenth studio album to date and first album of new material in 15 years, Happiness Bastards, which was propelled by the single "Wanting and Waiting." The follow-up to 2008's Before The Frost...Until The Freeze was produced by Jay Joyce.
