The Colombian music ensemble Monsieur Periné began to take shape in 2007 when vocalist Catalina García, guitarist Nicolás Junca, and multi-instrumentationalist Santiago Prieto first began performing together along with Camilo Parra. While they first played covers of popular Latin artists, they soon included a jazz influence and began to work on original material. They became a fixture on the Bogotá music scene and made their initial recordings of original pieces in 2010. They teamed with Alejandra Rivas Ramirez, a visual artist, and worked with them to create a distinct look for the band’s wardrobe and stage shows. They released their debut single, “La Muerte” ahead of their 2012 debut album Hecho a Mano, a collection that showcased the band’s combination of a strong Latin sound that included elements of many other musical traditions. Parra left before the release of 2015’s Caja de Música, a breakthrough that won them the Latin Grammy for Best New Artist and nominated in 2016 for the Grammy for Best Latin Rock, Urban or Alternative Album. Ramirez parted the organization, but 2018’s Encanto Tropical continued their hot streak with the single “Bailar Contigo” snagging Latin Grammy nods for Song and Record of the Year. In 2020 they issued a new single, the reggae-tinged “Mundo Paralelo,” a collaboration with Pedro Capó. Bolero Apocalíptico, their fourth full-length studio effort, arrived in 2023 and received a Latin Grammy award for Best Alternative Music Album.
