Credited with reinventing the UK's 2-step garage scene and bringing dance music back into the pop charts, brothers Guy and Howard Lawrence quickly became the soundtrack to a new generation of club kids. Brought up on 1980s soul and pop, the Surrey siblings started posting tracks online in 2010 when Howard was still only 15, and came to recognition when their remix of Jessie Ware's “Running” became an underground hit. Inspired by 1990s funky house beats and soulful melodies, they stood out from the dubstep craze and crossed over into the mainstream with infectious singles “Latch” (featuring Sam Smith) and UK Number 2 anthem “White Noise” (featuring AlunaGeorge). “You & Me” brought them their second Top 10 hit, while debut album Settle (2013) topped the UK chart and drew huge critical acclaim that included comparisons with Daft Punk, Rudimental and Chase and Status. The duo topped their breakthrough year with performances at Glastonbury Festival and Ibiza superclub Space, as they succeeded in creating commercial electro pop that recalls some of dance music's golden eras. After commissioning a bumper special edition of Settle featuring remixes from underground legend Wookie, hip-hop heavyweight DJ Premier and future bass hitmaker Flume, the pair returned to their winning formula on sophomore album Caracal (2015), which once again consisted of genre-straddling house and garage cuts featuring both big-name and up-and-coming guests. This time, R&B heartthrob The Weeknd, jazz stalwart Gregory Porter and Oceanian popstar Lorde were on board, and the group reclaimed their top spot on the UK Albums Chart, also reaching #9 in the US and bagging a Grammy nomination. After channelling retro influences into an obscure 2016 EP entitled Moog for Love, the Lawrences called a brief hiatus, returning reinvigorated in 2018 with a new EP, Moonlight, sample-heavy and steeped in international musical subcultures. They proved to be similarly well-travelled on follow-up EP Ecstasy (2020), which took cues from traditional African music and featured guest appearances from Cameroon’s Eko Roosevelt and Niger’s Etran Finatawa. Prior to releasing the project, they had racked up a pair of global hits with R&B singer Khalid in “Talk” and “Know Your Worth”, the first of which reached #3 in the US. Both songs later appeared on the duo’s third long-player, Energy (2020), which also included contributions from slowthai, Mick Jenkins and Syd among others and reached #4 in the UK. Energy was nominated for Best Dance/Electronic Album at 2021 Grammy Awards and "My High" was also nominated for Best Dance Recording. Following a celebrated mix for the esteemed DJ-Kicks series in 2021, Disclosure dropped their fourth studio album Alchemy in 2023, which was released through their own Apollo Records in partnership with AWAL and notably contained no guest vocalists or samples.
