Wax, a new wave pop-rock duo based in Manchester, England, was formed in 1983 by American singer-songwriter Andrew Gold and guitarist/bassist Graham Gouldman of 10cc. The band's initial work began when Gold contributed to 10cc’s album Ten Out of 10, leading to an invitation to join the group, which he declined due to other commitments. Following 10cc's split in 1983, Gouldman persuaded Gold to collaborate on new material, resulting in several singles under different names before settling on Wax. Their debut single "Don't Break My Heart" was released under the name World in Action and later reissued as Common Knowledge. The duo signed with RCA Records and released their first album Magnetic Heaven in 1986, which preceded the European hit "Bridge to Your Heart", later issued on their 1987 album American English. This song became a European hit, supported by TV appearances on shows like Top of the Popsand Peter's Pop Show. Their subsequent albums were American English (1987) and A Hundred Thousand in Fresh Notes(1989). Despite their success, Wax disbanded in 2000 following the release of compilation albums such as The Wax Files (1997), Common Knowledge.com (1998), and Bikini (2000).
