Asterean is a melodic death metal band from Sao Paulo, Brazil. The lyrical themes portray life and epic poetry. The band primarily performs a melodic death metal but also incorporates elements of heavy, atmospheric black and occasionally doom metal. Derived from the greek 'aster' meaning for 'star', Asterean is a proper name refering to an entity, an ocean guardian and atlantean rescuer. Enlivened by Renan Brito, former and mastermind behind the music foundry, the band counts on the companion old members of Espera XIII, Eduardo Ayres (bass), Rubstein Wilker (vocals) and Fernando H. (drums).
In December 2010, Renan Brito had the idea of creating a side project to explore more extreme sounds and experiment with greater freedom. Espera XIII was born. The sound of this project was a mixture of blackened death and melodic black metal with great vicerality in the first works and over time it was incorporating increasingly atmospheric elements. The lyrical themes were mostly about Portuguese navigations and the discovery of brazilian territory, as 'Espera' was one of the thirteen vessels that had disappeared from the fleet of Pedro A. Cabral (1500). In addition to being able to express new compositions, Renan used it as a laboratory to improve music production skills, a career he followed since then and continues to this day. Espera XIII released 2 demos, 1 album and 1 single. Respectively Escandalo (2011), Thy Great Expedition (2013), Unexpected Austral Lights (2015) and Hero (2019). Between the second demo and the first album the side project gained strength and members joined to make it alive. 'Hero' was marked as the last work under the name Espera XIII. The single already presented a different music purpose and it was becoming clear that a new energy was emerging in both music and lyrical worlds. In 2020 the name was changed to Asterean.
