It is often said that music is the great uniter....people are connected by a common love of music. Whoever said that hasn't spent any time in an online music discussion forum. One person declares their love of a particular musician, and the next thing we see are anonymous posts from society's music experts on why that person's pick is rubbish. Music CAN unite us, but it can also divide us. Welcome to episode 136 of See Hear Podcast. Kerry and I are thrilled to welcome back our brother, Tim Merrill after a needed absence. Our trio are back to discuss any manner of music-films. Our first round table in a while is the 2011 film, The Music Never Stopped. It's based on a case study by neurologist Oliver Sacks called The Last Hippie. The central protagonist has a large but benign tumour removed from his brain. The damage done to his hippocampus means he struggles to make new memories, and can only speak in short bursts. However, it's discovered that when he is asked about music, he returns to some sort of normality, particularly when asked about The Grateful Dead. The film differs from the case study in that it makes the story about the patient's (named Gabriel in the film) relationship with his father. We see Gabriel grow up originally engaged in his father's musical taste. However, as Gabe grows up during the late 60s in America during the era when teens were raging against the Vietnam conflict, the values of their parents, and were going in a very different musical direction, he storms out of home and is not seen for 20 years. When Gabe's parents rediscover where he is, Gabe's father (played by the wonderful J.K. Simmons) has to reconcile that to reconnect with his son, he has to forsake Bing Crosby for The Beatles, Bob Dylan, and The Grateful Dead. Like all good music films, there's more tackled here than the power of music to unite or divide. There's generation gap issues, mental health, family bonds, and the fragility of the brain. By 1986, REM were veterans of the college rock scene, had recorded in London and gotten songs into the charts. For their 4th album, Life's Rich Pageant, they took a step forward in stretching not only what they could do musically but voicing social, political and environmental concerns through their lyrics. We don't find it to be totally in your face (as opposed to say, U2) but more subliminal as their lyrics can sometimes be nebulous or at least not straight forward and not about rock cliches like hot rods and chicks (not that there's anything wrong with hot rods and chicks if you know what I'm saying out there boys - Ian Astbury, The Cult). They may sneak in stories about a polluted river in Cuyahoga or regret the rise and fall of a revolutionary in Central America (The Flowers of Guatemala) or even the effects of acid rain damaging our environment (Fall On Me). But they do it with upbeat riffs and guitar runs from Peter Buck with lead singer Michael Stipe delivering the message while bassist Mike Mills provides the counterpoint lyrics to not only tell the story but give REM their signature sound. The driving beat provided by Bill Berry make songs like I Believe an all out rocker you can jump around and shout along to. And they experiment with things like banjos on Swan Swan H and middle eastern sounds on Underneath The Bunker (not quite an instrumental). This album went gold and is the predecessor to Document which would be their first platinum record thanks to The One I Love & It's The End Of The World As We Know It (And I Feel Fine). Superman, a cover by the 60's psychedelic band Clique, helped them get in the charts and draw some interest beyond college campuses and college radio. That interest would build to Document which would lead to a $40 million record contract from Warner Brothers and put them on a steeper trajectory to pop superstardom. REM fans are often divided between those who knew and loved them in 80s before they hit it big and those who came to know them thanks to the big record company, expensive videos and pop stylings. For me, the IRS records of the 80s will always be the real REM and Life's Rich Pageant is a great moment in time for them. They've learned the ropes, made some good records and are not complacent - they moved forward believing in themselves, each other and their convictions which would eventually bring them all the success in the world. LTA episodes are not usually filled with stories of soldiers suffering PTSD while on R&R, working women who have to leave their children late at night, mobsters who were guilty of violent crimes, strip clubs, police corruption or the gentrification of Kings Cross…..but here we go…. Welcome to episode 194 of Love That Album Podcast. Over the course of the second half of the show’s life, my most frequent guest has been guitarist Shane Pacey. He’s the singer, songwriter and axe-slinger for The Bondi Cigars and The Shane Pacey Trio. He’s also a big music nerd who listens to a wide variety of albums, and I’ve been privileged to have him come on to the podcast to discuss with me some of his favourite records. The weird thing is that until now, we’ve not devoted that much time to his own creative work. I knew that had to change. In February of this year, Shane released his second solo album titled “Cross Of The Heart”. In a world where concept albums stretch to Tolkien or Asimov themes or nightmares or the 7 Deadly sins, I was taken aback when I discovered that Shane was pursuing tales of Kings Cross in Sydney. Before even listening, I knew that it would be a rich subject to mine. There are stories I knew of, but many I didn’t – be prepared folks, you’re going to get a fascinating history lesson. I’ve started reading Louis Nowra’s book “Kings Cross: A Biography” to get a greater appreciation of the history of this infamous district. Of course, Shane being a great melodicist writes some wonderful tunes, but it’s the stories and lyrics that are on show here (co written with Shane’s partner Holly Campbell – she does a terrific job). Kings Cross has often been infamous for its crime, but as we discuss, it was also home to bohemians and artists. It’s not just about the stuff that made the newspaper headlines. There are many personal stories told here, and it all works beautifully. Shane and Holly’s ability to write stories brings everything to life. The SP3 drummer, adds some spice on percussion, but otherwise every instrument and vocal is played by Shane. It’s an album I recommend highly. It was great to have Shane talk about his own music for a change. The album is only available digitally. We're gonna make you an offer you can't refuse...because this week, we go way back to discuss some of our favorite songs of 1972 with the marvelous Anne Richmond Boston from The Swimming Pool Q's! Possessing a crystalline voice, Anne's journey led her from church and high school choirs to the quirky new wave of the Swimming Pool Q's. Following their debut album The Deep End on DB Records in 1981, the Q's were one of the first Atlanta/Athens areas bands to be snapped up by a major label. For A&M, they recorded their self-titled second album (1984) and Blue Tomorrow (1986). A major tour with Lou Reed ensued, as did a major label makeover. Anne left the Q's in 1987, with her terrific solo debut, The Big House of Time (largely written by and recorded with then husband Rob Gal from The Coolies) following for DB in 1990. With such a promising start to her solo career, surely a second album was hot on its heels. Right??? Well, the intended follow up, I Should Be Happy, was recorded, roughly mixed, and then shelved for 30+ years for unknown reasons. Fortunately, the tapes were revitalized, revamped, and are at long last released! It's a beautiful song cycle about longing and loss, featuring a notable cast of musicians and singers. Eric Clapton had achieved pop success with The Yardbirds but that's not what he wanted. All Eric wanted to do was play the blues. So he left The Yardbirds to join John Mayall & The Bluesbreakers where through many miles and many gigs honed a guitar sound & style that would create a mythology around Clapton like no guitar player before. Their gigs must see happenings as once they were into a groove, the Bluesbreakers could improvise their way into something spectacular. John Mayall wanted to capture that live energy and creativity on an album but their first attempt (with bassist Jack Bruce who would figure into Clapton's story later) was not up to par. So they went to Decca Studios and worked to capture the best bits of their live set. Eric doesn't just take off, he does seem to build throughout the record just as he might during a live show. And John Mayall does take the spotlight as the lead singer, solid piano/organ man and a cool harmonica player. John McVie (who would eventually break from Mayall to form Fleetwood Mac with future drummer Mick Fleetwood) holds down the bass and Hughie Flint keeps it steady on the drums leaving room for Mayall and Clapton to do their thing. Though Mayall contributes some originals, they borrow from blues legends like Freddie King, Little Walter, Memphis Slim and Robert Johnson. On Johnson's Ramblin' on My Mind Clapton offers his first attempt at singing lead, something he was reluctant to do throughout his career but John nudged him. Clapton's playing was groundbreaking at the time and his reputation as a master of the guitar built rapidly. Graffiti popped up around London - Clapton is God. The Wolf & Action Jackson try their best to imagine what it must have been like to hear Eric play live at that time. Because they've never known a world with Eric Clapton and when they got to know him he was 40. Plus, they'd heard all the hot shots that had come after Clapton over the decades. We've always appreciated Clapton's tone and playing but trying to put our minds in a place where hearing anything like this was brand new was the challenge. It may not be as mind blowing as it was 60 years ago but it's still some rock solid blues by a guy at 20 years old who would define the blues (certainly for white folks) for the next half century. Sonic Boom was released on October 6, 2009 and the tour began on May 1, 2010 in Sheffield, England in and ended at the Graspop Metal Meeting Festival in Belgium on June 27, 2010. This tour was with the final KISS lineup of Gene Simmons, Paul Stanley, Eric Singer and Tommy Thayer. The tour was strictly in Europe. When the support of the album went to the United States it was referred as the Hottest Show On Earth Tour, which SIOL already covered on Episode 121. The stage was different from the Alive 35 tour and featured a huge HD video screen and KISS updated costumes which modernized their 1970's look with a variety of different items. The setlist featured 3 new songs from Sonic Boom, Modern Day Delilah which opened the show, Say Yeah and I'm An Animal, and many of the classic songs from KISS. As usual, the guys breakdown the costumes, stage, set list and overall tour. They then rank the costumes, stage, set list and overall tour against the previous tours reviewed so far.
