Charlie Chan is a non-binary Australian pianist and composer of Chinese-Malay and Scottish-Australian descent. Chan began playing ukulele, guitar, and drums at age eight, before learning piano at age 12. They later added double bass and worked as a music copyist for the television program Young Talent Time at age 14. Chan’s career accelerated in the 1990s with the release of the albums The Adventures of Charlie Chan (1993), East and West (1996), and Wild Swans (1998), which earned the Best Music Performance award at the 1997 Melbourne Fringe Festival. They also toured as a supporting act for Deep Forest. Chan composed soundtracks for productions such as Me Myself I (1998), McLeod's Daughters, and Killing Time, and co-founded the Global Orchestra. In 2023, their project Constellation (2023) delivered 52 albums, released weekly throughout the year. Their recognitions include two APRA Music Award nominations in 2001 and three nominations from the Australian Guild of Screen Composers.
