The multi-million selling American pianist George Winston is frequently classified as a new age performer and this is reinforced by his numerous number one albums in the US New Age Chart. Winston describes his music as falling into three more carefully defined musical styles - he plays classic new Orleans R&B piano but also performs in what he terms as 'rural folk' style, finally he is a great exponent of the Harlem Stride Piano method of playing as popularised by Fats Waller and Teddy Wilson. Whatever label you put on it, Winston's playing is extremely well received by US audiences and he has sold a great many records during a career which has lasted almost half a century.
From a sales point of view Winston's golden era was undoubtedly the early 1980s when he had three platinum selling albums - 'Autumn', 'Winter into Spring' and 'December', all released within a two-year period and each of which went platinum. Although his later record sales have never quite matched this height, he has consistently topped the New Age Charts with almost every subsequent release and remains one of America's most enduring performers.
