The original trio included Will Addison, whom they met at Trinity Hall, Cambridge. Their debut EP, The Trials of Cato, was recorded in London in 2016 after the band quit their jobs as English teachers in Beirut to focus on music. In 2018, The Trials of Cato released their first full-length album, Hide and Hair, which won Best Album at the BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards in 2019. Will Addison left the group in 2020 and was replaced by Polly Bolton. Their second album, Gog Magog, was released on November 25, 2022. The band also notably performed at Celtic Connections in 2022, supporting Sharon Shannon.
