Biography

American guitarist Eric Johnson has won acclaim for his precise renditions of blues, jazz and hard rock on a series of recordings including the hit single 'Cliffs of Dover' which peaked at number five on Billboard's Mainstream Rock Chart in 1990, 'Electric' which went to number three on the Jazz Albums Chart in 2014 and 'Europe: Live' which topped the Blues Albums Chart in the same year. His latest solo release, 'Collage' in 2017, features his own songs and covers of numbers by Lennon and McCartney, Jimi Hendrix and B.B. King.

Born in Austin, Texas to a musical family, he learned to play piano and guitar as a child and joined a rock group called Mariani when he was 15. He played with a fusion band called the Electromagnets and formed his own Eric Johnson Group for a while and then spent some time as a session player for artists such as Cat Stevens, Carole King and Christopher Cross. He made his solo recording debut with the album 'Tones' in 1986 followed in 1990 by 'Ah Via Musicom' which featured the hit single 'Cliffs of Dover' for which he won a Grammy Award. Other singles that made Billboard's Mainstream Rock Chart include 'High Landrons', 'Righteous', 'Trademark' and 'Pavilion'.
