Ásgeir – born Ágeir Trausti Einarsson in Laugarbakki, Iceland on July 1, 1992 – is a folktronica/alternative singer, songwriter, and musician. Initially credited as Ásgeir Trausti, he began using the mononym Ásgeir in 2013. Ásgeir grew up in an isolated village located on an island in the north of Iceland with a population of less than 10. He was a passionate about American music, whether it was Nirvana, Johnny Cash or Bob Dylan. Inspired by the music, he formed a small band with a drummer friend. In order to complete his education, he moved to Reykjavik, Iceland, which inspired his musical passion even more. At the age of 20, he recorded his first solo album, Dýrð í dauðaþögn (2012). The album’s first single, “Sumargestur”, reached Number 2 on the Icelandic Singles chart. The single “Lyndarmál” reached the Number 1 position and stayed there for six weeks. The album’s title track also reached the Number 1 position. In 2013, Ágeir re-recorded the album’s lyrics in English (thanks to former Czars leader John Grant). The album was released internationally as In the Silence (2013). The album hit Number 2 in Iceland and entered the Top 40 in Australia, France, UK, and the Netherlands. In 2017, Ásgeir released the English-language album Afterglow, which charted in the same countries as his previous album. In 2020, he released the album Bury the Moon, which featured the single “Youth”.
