Bristol’s wych elm play scrappy, menacing and contemplative grungy indie rock with a touch of the macabre. The band’s obsession with dark, haunting tales works its way into every facet of their music, with howled vocals telling the stories of a murderous mother and issues around their own mental health sitting above ear shredding guitars, rumbling bass and rattling drums. Fittingly, the band formed to play a Halloween show in 2017 before releasing their debut EP two years later through new Bristol imprint Post Mortem Records, who sold 50 vinyl copies anonymously under the name Jane Doe in hand sewn cadaver bags. The release was a concise, considered and impactful collection of songs and earned them slots at Green Man, Truck and 2000trees festivals as well as support slots with the likes of Hotel Lux, Black Honey, Lice and Snail Mail.
Working hard behind the scenes towards their follow up release, there is plenty already in the pipeline for the band with slots at metropolitan festivals Dot to Dot in Bristol and Nottingham and Wide Eyed in Leicester as well as Bristol and London headline shows for the end of 2021 before their biggest show to date, supporting IDLES at O2 Academy Brixton in January 2022.
